[Laffey cosplay] That Adorably Dazed Laffey from Azur Lane, Gazing Right at You

To do justice to Laffey from Azur Lane (Azur Lane) for this shoot, a substantial amount of time was spent perfecting the costume, hair, and makeup beforehand. From sculpting the wig to smoothing out every trim on the blue-and-white dress, down to the mechanical bow hairpieces tipped with semi-translucent blue spikes, everything was aligned as closely as possible to canon. To channel the character's signature adorably dazed presence, I chose reddish-brown contact lenses and emphasized the eyelashes and blush, aiming for that wide-eyed, unblinking gaze that feels intensely focused yet completely innocent.

For this studio session, we utilized high-key lighting to cast a soft, diffused illumination that merged seamlessly with the seamless white backdrop for a clean, ethereal mood. In the shot sitting on the floor, I adjusted the angle of my crossed legs; this not only ensured the contours of the White stockings looked smooth and flattering, but also conveyed a natural, relaxed posture. Paired with white plush bunny slippers on my feet, the overall aesthetic felt wonderfully cozy and charming. To keep my silhouette from stiffening up, I cycled through various camera angles to guarantee the frame felt balanced and comfortable.

The frame where I lie on my stomach hugging the plush toy was actually much more demanding than the seated poses. The prone pose required propping my upper torso on my elbows while lifting both lower legs behind me, relying on lower-back strength to hold steady; however, this composition offered gorgeous visual extension. For props, I brought along a yellow chick plushie, which, framed against a white picket railing in the background, infused the scene with playful, slice-of-life warmth. Throughout the shoot, the photographer constantly guided my eyeline. Since the theme was 'gazing right at you,' whether seated or lying down, my eyes could never wander and had to remain locked onto the lens. This placed high demands on micro-expressions—keeping my head tilt locked while conveying emotion purely through the eyes.

Switching poses back and forth across the set in this attire meant the combination of plush slippers and stockings was warm yet slippery, taking quite a while to find stances that harmonized comfort with camera appeal. While a white studio backdrop is static, subtle shifts in lighting and angles create dramatically different textures. The blue-and-white palette can easily wash out against pure white, so post-processing deliberately preserved garment shadows and fold details to enhance dimensional depth. The entire session was an ongoing fine-tuning of nuance to capture that serene, focused gaze, merging character essence and wardrobe design naturally into the frames—a satisfying conclusion to all my preparation.
