When shooting this set of night photos with the blue and white light veil and the transparent umbrella prop, the temperature and scene at the time were actually a bit more complex than expected. It was very windy outdoors at night, and the ground was somewhat slippery from the recent rain. Capturing the soft and dreamy feel of this blue-themed dress under such extreme conditions was indeed a major test of on-site lighting coordination and photoshoot efficiency. Because this outfit utilizes a large amount of lightweight sheer fabric, the layered ruffles, though highly dimensional in visual appearance, required constant adjustments of my poses and the skirt hem on a windy night to let the fabric present its most natural and elegant state.
Speaking of the outfit coordination, the main color palette of the styling consists of ice blue and pure white. The upper body features a light-colored inner wear with subtle textures, spliced with fluffy blue tulle decorations, and the cuffs are also designed with semi-transparent tulle, perfectly connecting the overall lightweight texture. The skirt hem of the lower body is cut with irregular ruffles, combined with decorative tulle strips draping along the body, which creates a highly beautiful streamlined effect when walking. To fit this cool and elegant setting, I paired it with white lace mid-calf socks and light-colored chunky-heeled sandals. Although these transparent chunky heels look beautiful, standing for a long time actually causes my feet to fatigue very easily, especially on the slippery ground. I had to rely on my core strength to maintain balance so that I wouldn't slip while striking poses.
Regarding the hairstyle, this light blue short wig was styled with rich layers, carrying an agility unique to an anime girl. Combined with simple hair accessories and blue stud earrings, it kept the entire head styling clean and refreshing. In the second half of the shoot, I added a red bowknot hair accessory. Since the rainy night view as a whole presented cool tones, the red bowknot served as an excellent color-contrast and visual focus, allowing the character to stand out from the overall cool blue-toned environment. Set against the blue-and-white railings by the river, this pop of red was exceptionally eye-catching.
We mainly chose two scenes for this shoot. The first scene was in front of an outdoor beverage vending machine, where the cool white light from the glass freezer provided an excellent diffuse light source, and the various beverage bottles inside the glass door filled the frame with a lively urban buzz. To move away from a dry, static standing pose, I utilized the transparent umbrella prop as an interactive element. Holding the umbrella gently, I used turning, looking back, and slightly lifting the skirt hem to infuse the frame with a strong narrative sense. The second scene was a waterfront corridor at night, with the wide night river behind and the faint lights of a distant bridge. Some rainwater had gathered on the ground pavement, and under the photographer's lighting, the puddles reflected a large area of pinkish-red halo, adding a hazy and romantic atmosphere to the cold night.
In terms of photography techniques, besides the conventional frontal fill light from the flash, the photographer also utilized some constant light sources to outline my silhouette. The transparent umbrella prop was an extremely critical item in this shoot; it did more than just shield me from wind and rain—more importantly, it could refract and transmit light. When the flash hit the umbrella surface, the canopy formed a soft glowing body, making the light striking my face exceptionally soft with delicate transitions in facial shadows, preventing harsh facial shadows and creating a soft, dreamlike, and transparent visual effect. The sequins and decorations on the skirt hem also showed a twinkling texture under the capture of the flash, which, combined with the reflective water stains, greatly elevated the quality of this set of photos.
It took a lot of time to capture the entire set of photos, but I am highly satisfied with the final result matching my expectations so well—whether it is the folds of the clothing, the layering of the light, or the character's expressions under the cold and warm light and shadow. Although staying up late for the shoot was exhausting, looking at these final pictures makes everything feel completely worth it in our cosplay photography journey.
