Trying to recreate Sparkle's outfit from Honkai: Star Rail, the greatest challenge lay in how to naturally let her quirky, eccentric, mysterious, and cunning aura flow in front of the lens. To fit the character's unique temperament, a very light pink long wig was chosen for this Sparkle cosplay, and the iconic flat bangs and layered twintails were carefully hand-trimmed. Paired with the classic small black top hat and white rabbit ear decorations, it instantly maxed out the character's recognition.
In terms of makeup, to faithfully recreate the character setting, besides the iconic red eyes, subtle red moles were intentionally added under the eyes and at the outer corners. Paired with a slightly innocent yet playful lip makeup, this makes her gaze much more agile when conveying emotions. The details of the costume heavily tested garment craftsmanship; the black-and-white diamond lattice pattern on the inside, the exquisite small metal accessories at the neckline, and the patchwork of navy blue and red-and-white stripes on the wide cuffs altogether formed the visual focus of this gorgeous outfit. Amid the bustling crowds at the venue for these Convention photos, we specifically chose to frame our shots at the architectural corners, utilizing the on-site ceiling lights and the depth of the venue to highlight the contrast of the red and white color blocks.
As for props, the red-and-white long-handled staff and that small black-and-white plush toy were absolutely the soul of the shoot. Holding them allowed me to naturally strike some playful yet character-defining poses. During this Cosplay photography session, the photographer and I worked together to adjust many different angles. We captured both the youthful girl vibe in full-body standing poses and experimented with cute sitting positions on the ground interacting with the props. For the final selected set of images, a softer tone was used to balance out the large color blocks of the costume itself. I believe cosplay isn't just about putting on clothes, but about freezing those 2D fantasy moments through facial expressions, perspectives, and a deep understanding of the character's personality.
