Shooting in this costume was quite physically demanding, especially with the gold-patterned arm guards and rigid black over-the-knee boots, which somewhat restricted movement. The set was beautifully styled with a Wisteria background and a crimson wall. To capture the character's commanding presence, I carefully tested and studied various postures. Particularly for the shots of sipping tea and brandishing the blade, the photographer and I spent a long time fine-tuning them to find the most natural exertion points. The weapon prop itself had considerable weight; holding it up for full-body shots made my wrists ache intensely, and I had to summon every bit of energy to project that sharp, piercing intensity. In post-processing, cool purple Lightning special effects were added based on the character's lore—especially the floating eye above the head and the surrounding arcs of lightning. Recreating the authentic in-game look took a tremendous amount of effort in color grading and compositing.
This costume has numerous intricate details; the collar design and sleeve patterns require meticulous styling, otherwise the silhouette easily looks bulky. Because of the vivid character palette, the purple and white combination stood out strikingly against the red wall and Wisteria background. Any slightly broad movement during the shoot tended to dishevel the skirt hem, so before every shutter click, we had to tidy it up carefully. Especially for the katana details: since electric current effects would be added in post-production, I needed to freeze my pose and stay completely still for a moment to ensure the effects aligned seamlessly with my posture. In addition, because the whole outfit is structured and heavy, coupled with the stiffness of the tall boots, getting dressed and undressed took quite some time.
We also paid deliberate attention to composition. For instance, in the teacup frames, to convey an unhurried, serene composure, the placement of the teaware and the curve of my lifted arm had to be aligned with precision. For the wide shot featuring the purple eye effect, I positioned myself dead center on the mat, adjusting my stance to match the flow of the lightning. On set, a wide-aperture lens and a softbox were utilized to soften the background while emphasizing facial lighting, preserving the ambiance of the red wall and purple blossoms while cleanly separating the subject from the backdrop. This Japanese style cosplay shoot incorporated distinct emotional expressions: the standing poses prioritized imposing presence with a piercing gaze, whereas the seated tea-sipping photos leaned toward quiet tranquility, angling slightly sideways to let the skirt hem drape naturally. Immersing myself in the character's persona and experimenting with diverse lighting and angles is always the most rewarding part of cosplay. Refining details and adjusting postures took hours, but seeing the finished photos made all the effort worthwhile.
There is no complex rationale behind it; I simply wanted to express the character's core essence through these images as faithfully as possible. The color collision is striking: the red wall, wisteria, and purple-and-white attire deliver compelling visual impact. The post-processed Lightning special effects harmonizing with varied poses also deepened the overall mood. From straightforward, commanding full-body standing shots to seated poses highlighting leg contours, the shoot put both body proportions and the flattering fit of the costume to the test.
