Nocturnal portraiture on rainy nights invariably delivers delightful surprises. For this shoot of Remielle from Zenless Zone Zero, we deliberately selected a rainy evening; raindrops beading across the Transparent umbrella refracted prismatic sparkles beneath the neon glow. The sheer black mesh dress grew increasingly translucent in the humid air, paired with a white folded collar, crimson ribbon ties, black bowknots, and grey barrettes to strike a sublime balance between gothic drama and refined elegance. Beyond ordinary streetscapes, we scouted a vintage glass storefront accented with brass moldings and white lettering, where warm interior chandeliers contrasted sharply against cool exterior neons to forge a vivid chromatic interplay.
To align with her elven ear features, considerable effort went into cosmetics, emphasizing crimson irises and subtly flicked winged eyeliner to balance mystery with playful mischief. Synthetic wigs easily collapse in wet weather, so I prepped the fibers with heavy sculpting hairspray before call time to ensure fluffy volume persisted through drizzling mist. Down below, black Stockings paired with pointed-toe stilettos visually elongated leg lines whether crouching or leaning against the glass facade, cultivating an icy, nocturnal presence roaming the city shadows.
Although the venue imposed restrictions—such as Universal Studios barring external wings from entering—preventing a full replica of her celestial angel wings, I strove to compensate through physical posture and eye expressions. Tilting my head gently under the umbrella or brushing my fingertips along my chin, I sustained a light, tsundere demeanor to convince the viewer of my angelic identity. Nailing the low crouch demanded balancing all body weight across one planted foot with the other softly bent while steadying the umbrella in hand—a severe test of stamina and balance—yet the second the shutter snapped, I snapped into character.
Synergy with photographer @NaiLingLing was effortless. The trickiest hurdle in night photography is light management, particularly outdoors in rain where chaotic ambient fixtures cast blinding specular puddles. We capitalized on warm amber store lights and colored neon tubes outside. When the Transparent umbrella flagged harsh glare to cast soft shadows across my face, the cinematic ambiance materialized instantly. The glass doors served as fantastic props: peering out through droplet-streaked panes or leaning on the brass frames yielded deep narrative layers via reflections and perspective. We even bounced ambient streetlight off the underside of the umbrella to fill facial shadows, yielding surprisingly flattering results.
Crouching over rain-slicked asphalt tested core endurance severely, particularly maintaining leg angles to keep the sleek texture of the Stockings and shoe silhouettes crisp before the lens while shifting balance across slippery ground. Though demanding, seeing the rain-soaked reflections and dreamy neon flares in the final cuts made every drop endured worthwhile. Beyond costume replication, this series sought to capture her agile, aloof spirit in a specific atmospheric climate.
