Today, I'm sharing the convention photos taken at Firefly ACG Expo. The character I cosplayed is Rem, and this black-and-white maid outfit is truly a classic among classics—every time I wear it, the craftsmanship amazes me. Starting with the costume, the maid outfit features incredible layering; the white ruffled neckline pairs with a black waist corset, where three rows of crisscrossing white laces stand out vividly. Fastening them with just the right tension is essential to highlight the waistline without restricting breathing. The scalloped hem with white edging is delicately tailored, making lifting the skirt a must-have pose for every convention shoot, as the skirt's curve beautifully presents the full silhouette. For the lower half, I wore white stockings with serrated tops paired with glossy black Mary Janes, and I'm very satisfied with how faithfully the ensemble recreates the character.
The wig and makeup also took plenty of effort. The short blue hair with straight bangs needed prior trimming and styling, especially at the ends, to ensure a clean look without flyaways. The black headband is adorned with white flowers, while the pink ribbon on the right serves as a sweet focal point, pinned securely to the side. For eye makeup, blue contact lenses were paired with soft reddish shading around the eyes to accentuate Rem's signature charm, finished with a fresh, dewy pink lip for a clean, luminous overall face. To keep the look intact throughout the convention day, setting spray and loose powder were absolute essentials, particularly given the summer expo crowds that required regular touch-ups.
Speaking of Firefly ACG Expo, the venue was packed with heavy foot traffic and complex lighting, which tested the photographer's framing and candid-capture skills. We sought out relatively clean backdrops and utilized a wide aperture to melt the background crowds and booths into soft bokeh, keeping the focus squarely on the subject. We tried many poses during the shoot, such as pointing toward the lens with one hand, cradling the cheeks with both hands, saluting, or throwing up peace signs. When pointing at the lens, balancing body weight while angling slightly sideways not only adds interactive charm but also flatters the waistline. When holding up the skirt with both hands, opening the arms naturally showcases the graceful drape of the fabric.
Wearing this outfit was quite a test of stamina—navigating the crowded hall in a long ruffled skirt and heeled Mary Janes meant constantly watching my footing to avoid tripping or stepping on the hem. To keep the white stockings smooth and crease-free, I tried to sit and smooth them out during breaks. Having a deep love for this series and character, I always strive to get every detail right—from ironing the fabrics and inspecting accessories to combing the wig and perfecting makeup adhesion, no step can be rushed. The saying 'if true love has a color, it must be blue' resonates so strongly at the convention floor. Seeing so many passionate fans gather together made every bit of effort completely worthwhile. These photos captured countless precious moments from that day and reminded me once again of the pure joy of cosplay.
