The Halloween-exclusive styling for Rem is all set. This time, I chose Rem's Halloween casual outfit from Re:ZERO -Starting Life in Another World-. While doing makeup, I wondered how to blend witchy elements with maid charm, ultimately deciding on her signature blue short hair paired with this black patent leather miniskirt.
The highlight of this outfit lies in its material: glossy patent leather reflects indoor lighting with fantastic texture, and the single gold button at the chest serves as the finishing touch. The collar choker and long gloves harmonize beautifully, while the ruffled hem adds a playful, flirtatious touch to the silhouette. To match the Halloween atmosphere, I wore an oversized witch hat adorned with a yellow ribbon. Paired with Over-the-knee boots, a Black tights outfit concept, and thigh garters, it visually elongates leg proportions.
Since this was a mirror selfie session, capturing visual dynamic tension wasn't easy. Holding the phone with one hand to cover part of the face added a veil of mystery, while raising the brim of the witch hat with the other and shifting my body weight slightly prevented stiff posture. The resulting shots, coupled with the mirror reflections, showcased the garment's tailoring and body curves.
Lighting was adjusted constantly throughout the shoot because patent leather reflects light easily; finding the right angle was essential to give the boots and skirt their intended rich texture. The Halloween theme is trick-or-treat: seeing the usually devoted Rem step into the Halloween night in this outfit brings a completely refreshing charm. The blue hair preserves her signature recognizability—even in a subtly alluring black leather outfit, everyone instantly recognizes Rem.
Pre-production for this shoot was quite intricate. First was smoothing the blue wig; short styles frizz easily, requiring thorough combing after applying holding spray. Second, the patent leather outfit was tedious to put on and take off and trapped heat easily; keeping optimal on-camera condition required managing shoot duration to avoid sweating. The Over-the-knee boots and thigh garters added layered structure, flattering leg lines while suiting the slightly edgy, alluring holiday theme. The asymmetrical styling—bare leg on the left, boot on the right—was intended to inject visual intrigue.
Conceptualizing this set wasn't about strictly replicating original anime scenes, but using costumes and props like pumpkins to craft a Halloween party vibe. In the spirit of Re:ZERO -Starting Life in Another World-, across different parallel timelines, Rem might very well dress like this for a Halloween party, going door to door for 'trick or treat'. Preserving core recognition—the blue hair, signature color palette of black, blue, and yellow—kept the look cohesive. Capturing this through mirror selfies added an intimate, lifelike perspective, bringing this beloved 2D character right into a real-world holiday.
