[Sakuya Izayoi Cosplay] The Dashing Maid of Touhou Project: Intersecting Time and Blades

This photoshoot of Sakuya Izayoi cosplay from Touhou Project took about two weeks of preparation in total. From repeated costume fittings to inspecting prop details, and finally confirming the scene and lighting, every single step required meticulous communication with the team. Because the character herself possesses very distinct traits in her lore—that composed sense of dashing confidence, as well as the sharp, swift skills hidden behind her maid identity—conveying all of this in static photographs was by no means an easy task.

Let's first talk about this maid cosplay and black tights outfit itself. The chosen fabric has a nice drape without feeling overly heavy, and the subtle jacquard texture on the dark fabric presents rich layers under side lighting. The multi-layered lace ruffles on the neckline and skirt hem required ironing and shaping to ensure they wouldn't collapse during the shoot. The dark green bow tie on the chest is the finishing touch of the entire costume; it neutralizes the coldness of the black-and-white palette, giving the overall color scheme room to breathe. The headband on top was also adjusted multiple times to fit the hairstyle while remaining decorative. When styling the wig, the stylist intentionally kept a slightly messy fluffiness at the back of the head, which fits the character's temperament better.

What required the most attention during shooting was actually the relaxed quality of body language. When holding the dagger in my right hand, the wrist shouldn't be too tense; otherwise, the muscular lines in the photos would look stiff, losing that sense of effortless cool. The vintage carving on the hilt has great texture and a satisfying weight in hand, and this realistic weight helped me get into character much faster. For the action of lifting the pocket watch with my left hand, I had to pay attention to the drooping arc of the chain while showing the character's elegance through finger positioning. For the camera angle, we chose a side-profile looking back composition, using the vintage cutout patterns of the screen and nearby blue-and-white flowers as the foreground to create spatial depth.

The set design and lighting this time also fit the character exceptionally well. The entire shoot utilized cool cyan-blue lighting paired with semi-sheer white curtains, creating a dreamlike haze while highlighting the character's calm and mysterious aura. The pot of dark blue roses on the left echoed the cool tones of the outfit, making the color composition more harmonious. To capture the most natural gaze during anime cosplay photography, the photographer clicked the shutter frequently, while I kept adjusting my facial micro-expressions to convey both a maid's polite restraint and the sharp edge of a dashing fighter.

Portraying such a classic Touhou Project character in the anime community definitely came with some pressure, as everyone has already formed a rich understanding of Sakuya Izayoi. But it was precisely this pressure that made me focus even more during the shoot, pondering her habitual movements and thinking about how she would present herself in a still state. Looking at the raw, unedited photos right out of the camera after the shoot, I could feel that the emotion and understanding I invested in this character were clearly reflected in every frame. Whether facing time, facing sharp blades, or facing her duties as a maid, this beauty where elegance and decisiveness coexist is what moves me most about her.
