For this shoot, we chose a natural light setting. For the Natural style cosplay I love, authenticity always comes first. I deliberately simplified the makeup to minimize stage makeup heavy-handedness, aiming for a light, translucent base and soft, natural brows, while focusing attention on the teal contact lenses that capture Reze's distinct gaze. The hair wasn't overly styled either, leaving a slightly messy, layered look. I have to say, the photographer's guidance was immensely helpful.
We shot in an alley with everyday ambiance; although there was some clutter in the background, that is precisely the authentic texture of real life. The first photo focuses on frontal composition, holding a Daisy in hand, which served as a wonderful visual accent. The photographer used shadow areas to make my face and the flowers stand out—I absolutely love the texture rendered by this contrast.
The second shot caught a turn in motion, where the flare under strong backlighting gave it a truly cinematic feel. Cradling a whole bouquet, with light catching my hair and paired with a glancing look back, the shot was full of dynamic movement. This shooting style actually demands immense synergy between model and photographer because the light is fleeting and requires rapid candid captures.
Costume-wise, pairing a white shirt with a black suspender dress and a black choker created a classic visual contrast that cleanly defined the character's personality. While this outfit looks straightforward, I put a lot of care into ironing and prepping so the wrinkles and folds would fall naturally on camera. I truly feel that a natural aesthetic isn't just about shooting casually; it demands even stricter control over details, such as a split-second breeze rustling through hair or subtle finger postures holding flowers.
Preparing this Reze cosplay was quite challenging because conveying her essence in still frames requires carefully studying how she looks at people. Fortunately, my photographer friend "Xiao Lu Bao Bao" was very patient, reminding me to balance my center of gravity before every shutter click. Leveraging changing light and shadows, we explored several camera angles. I believe that only by truly grasping the character's sense of fatalism in Chainsaw Man can one portray her without looking contrived. That is likely why I have always adhered to Natural style cosplay. When handling light, the use of backlight and side light was very deliberate—not for showing off technique, but simply to capture the atmospheric medium in the air so the image doesn't feel rigid.
In my view, great Cosplay photography is not merely about costume accuracy, but capturing the inner spirit. I will continue sticking to this candid capture style, trying to understand the inner world of characters with each shoot.
