The ambient lighting at convention venues is usually not very friendly to cosplayers, mostly consisting of overhead spotlights that easily flatten the face or create harsh shadows. However, this time, by taking advantage of the photographer's angles and utilizing side-backlighting, we actually managed to highlight the textures of these two outfits from entirely different color schemes.
The first outfit, the blue-haired look, gives off an immediate impression of lightness and agility. The long, light-blue wig is paired with fluffy pink-and-white rabbit ears and an exaggerated large blue rose hair ornament, instantly setting a sweet, dreamy foundation. The midriff-baring cut of the top, combined with the blue-and-white ribbons, beautifully presents the lines of the neck, shoulders, and waist. The dark blue pleated miniskirt, paired with the glossy blue fabric of the lower hem, is distinctly layered. The transparent block-heeled sandals and white thigh-high socks visually elongate the body proportions, making the overall posture look even more upright.
When shooting the blue-haired look, I deliberately focused on the softness of my body movements. That grand pose of holding up the flower prop actually uses the angles of the shoulders and elbows to create a lazy stretch, maintaining overall physical tension. On the other hand, the pose with one leg raised and one hand touching the forehead not only demands high physical balance but also requires the graceful coordination of the upper arms and fingers. To avoid looking stiff, I repeatedly adjusted my center of gravity, letting the wide skirt and long hair freeze-frame under the photographer's shutter, ultimately creating this visual contrast of motion and stillness.
Shifting to the purple-haired look brought a completely different shooting tempo. The dark purple fabric of the costume has a rich, heavy texture, decorated with highly detailed embroidery of gold lines and runic patterns. The metallic-textured accessories at the collar, cuffs, and shoulders add a three-dimensional depth to the entire outfit, while the black lace at the bottom of the skirt adds just the right amount of refinement to the dark color scheme. The black mesh sleeve on the left arm and the barefoot design of the left foot, paired with a gold anklet, greatly enhance the character's mysterious and free-spirited temperament.
The shooting focus for the purple-haired look was on strength and tension. That low-posture side leg-press movement is one of my absolute favorites. It requires the body to remain stretched under an extremely low center of gravity while the cape behind flutters with the movement, creating a dynamic, sweeping wind effect. Meanwhile, the pose kneeling on one knee and leaning forward requires dropping the center of gravity suddenly and following the direction of the wand in hand with a focused gaze, simulating a state of intense concentration right before casting a powerful spell. Such large-scale movements also tested the durability of the costume, but fortunately, the fabric's resilience was more than enough.
The venue's floor was a standard exhibition hall surface, but the dark, slightly reflective floor provided us with natural elements for symmetric reflections. My coordination with @Pulao411 was incredibly seamless this time. Beautifully embodying the three elements of portrait photography, we utilized a wide aperture to completely blur out the crowded background of people and booths, turning the dense white overhead lights of the exhibition hall into rhythmic bokeh spots—just like spotlights on a stage, highlighting the subject's position.
Cosplaying two characters of vastly different styles in a single day is a real test of one's ability to switch states, quickly finding the emotional anchor point for each character, from lively and playful to calm and introverted. However, seeing the final images on the camera screen made all the prep work entirely worth it. Guided by the play of light and shadow and refined by the carefully sculpted movements, both stylings showcased their unique character charms, serving as a highly satisfying result for this convention.
