Putting on this Rock style outfit, replacing the Evangelion pilot's jacket with a loose denim jacket, casually hanging a tie around my neck, and adding red straps along with plush accessories, I wanted to give this version of Rei Ayanami more of a casual street band vibe. The shooting location this time was chosen in an industrial-style maintenance workshop. The corrugated iron walls, tool hanging boards, and that pendant light unexpectedly matched the blue and red color-blocking of this costume, creating a sort of wasteland cyberpunk atmosphere.
The makeup was intentionally kept light to retain Rei Ayanami's distinct cold detachment, but a touch of stage-like sharpness was added to the eyes. The wig is a custom light blue short hairstyle; the positions of the hairpins and the beret were repeatedly adjusted several times to find the most natural curve. The photographer's snapshots were highly precise. That saluting moment in the second photo felt especially right—maintaining the character's sense of alienation while bringing out the confidence of a band member.
The core focus of this creation lies in "possibility"—Rei Ayanami from Neon Genesis Evangelion is not just a pilot wearing a plugsuit; she can also stand in front of a microphone and express her emotions in her own way. In terms of costume details, the frayed edges of the shorts and the straps on the legs were given a distressed treatment. Paired with white stockings and platform shoes, the visual center of gravity for the overall styling lands on the lower body, providing a wonderful dynamic aesthetic when moving around. Some small props were also prepared on-site, such as guitar picks and wristbands. Although they weren't all captured in the frame, holding them during the shoot helped me get into character much faster. I feel the true charm of Anime cosplay lies in this kind of re-creation—adding one's own aesthetics and ideas while respecting the spirit of the original work. This attempt at a rock version was a highly gratifying experience for this Photography sharing post.
