As a player and cosplayer who loves delving into character settings, I finally had the chance to present Sparkle from Honkai: Star Rail at the anime convention. Considering the character's inherent vibrant, confident, and slightly crazed temperament, I decided to use this set of convention photos to interpret the spirit of Elation as I understand it. The costume utilizes a large amount of red fabric with a metallic luster, and the deep V-neck design paired with black criss-cross straps creates excellent visual tension, while matching the blue adornments at the waist to break the monotony of a large area of red.
The venue for this shoot was an indoor rest area of the anime convention. The ground was a rough grey concrete floor with an industrial vibe. To prevent the costume and background from looking too abrupt, we specially laid out a large white round plush carpet, instantly pulling the color center of the entire frame back onto the character. The photographer's lighting setup was very clever, with direct strong light from the front casting crisp shadows, which happens to fit the sharply outlined character portrait of Sparkle. As an experientialist, I particularly like those red tie-up sandals on my feet; not only is the craftsmanship exquisite, but the golden bells at the ankles jingled lightly with the movements during the shooting process, serving as an excellent atmosphere regulator.
In the process of conceiving the actions, in order to unleash the sexy advantage of this costume, I specially chose postures that extended the limbs and showcased the leg lines. Since the skirt hem adopts a high-slit design, it needed to cooperate with appropriate sitting or lying postures to display smooth outlines. The most satisfying composition was snapshotting from right above using a wide-angle lens, where the human body presented a natural diagonal direction. This not only caught the circular geometric feel of the plush carpet but also displayed the red tie-up high heels, exposed arm skin, and the red flower print on the chest unreservedly before the lens, while not overlooking the huge white fox mask on top of the head. That fox mask could be said to be a difficult point in the shooting process; its volume is massive, requiring hairpins and fine strings to be fixed on the head without affecting facial expressions and gaze delivery. Fortunately, the final effect was quite good, and the red bowknot of the mask became the highest visual highlight of the entire frame.
After finishing the shoot, we took a stroll around the anime convention. Quite a few enthusiastic fellow fans recognized this costume, and everyone passed around that classic catchphrase, which is probably the purest kind of resonance in anime culture. I also grabbed some props during the shooting process, such as a red-and-white color-blocked toy gun and a folding fan with a black base and blue patterns. These elements were not mere decorations but clever tricks used to enrich hand movements and break limb stiffness when lying down. Being able to complete such a high-restoration styling and capture its most vibrant side in an environment full of sound, light, and electricity like an anime convention is a highly memorable experience.
To ensure the overall texture of the photos, we specially chose to shoot in an area with less pedestrian flow during the latter half of the exhibition. This could avoid other attendees accidentally entering the background, letting the audience focus more on the design aesthetics of the character itself. The laid white round carpet not only solved the problem of insufficient reflection on the concrete floor but also added a soft transition feel to the frame, forming a contrast with the hard metallic ornaments on the character. Another interesting detail is that to balance the cool and passionate visual effects, I also painted symbolic cherry blossom red marks on the skin, which gave the overall skin texture and red dress a more unified narrative feel. This whole day's input, from the morning makeup until finally packing up the gear, although the body was extremely fatigued, seeing these frames in the camera that can accurately convey the character's aura brought a great sense of achievement flowing inside my heart. The spirit of pure enthusiasts often hides within these exquisite details and tireless fine-tuning.
