This pure white-themed shoot was taken in an all-white studio. To create a high-key visual effect without harsh shadows, soft diffuse light was cast across the set, with a thick white plush carpet laid on the floor. The white wings behind me were specially rented before the shoot, and we spent a long time grooming the feathers to make them look fluffy and natural. For hair, I used a light blue short wig with subtle layered trimming at the ends, perfectly suiting such a quiet character. For makeup, I chose pink-toned eyeshadow and light lip color, paired with red colored contacts to make the gaze appear clearer and slightly hollow. The costume was a custom white crisscross-strap top and miniskirt, along with white bandages on the right leg; I paid special attention to tightness when wrapping them so visible indentation marks wouldn't affect the frame.
When shooting started, the photographer asked for elongated postures—for instance, in the first standing shot reaching out, pointing the toes was required to stretch leg proportions, which, paired with clear high heels, made the calf lines look more slender. The middle shots sitting on the stool focused on torso twist to highlight waist curves, testing core strength as well. The shots sitting on the plush rug emphasized a straightened back and restrained hand gestures; poses like hugging knees or pressing palms together resonated with the distant, tranquil soul of the character. Post-processing mainly focused on adjusting highlights, cleaning background blemishes, brightening skin tones, and refining the wing layers.
This set took about three hours to shoot. Maintaining emotional poise was crucial—no laughing or heavy expressions, mastering a blank, vacant gaze. In Neon Genesis Evangelion, Rei Ayanami communicates emotion through minimal words and pure eyes. This subtle expression, contrasting sharply with the bright environment, was captured very accurately in these photos and was exactly the styling vibe I wanted to attempt. Looking at the six final photos in different poses after the shoot, that cool, aloof ambiance was captured beautifully. Moreover, this shoot gave me a fresh understanding of all-white styling; white palettes easily look flat in a studio, requiring precise lighting control. It was a delightful collaboration, and I hope to challenge even bolder contrast styles next time.
