The physical toll of Summer Fest Day 1 was genuinely beyond imagination; this Neon Genesis Evangelion Rei Ayanami plugsuit was so constricting it nearly took my breath away. Collapsing into the car seat right after leaving the convention hall, my shoulders already bore deep red indentations pressed in by the shoulder armor. Partnering up with Xiangxiang for this event—with her cosplaying Asuka—instantly turned heads the second we stepped inside, but the physical burden multiplied just as dramatically.
First, the wearing experience of this suit: to capture that sci-fi mecha aesthetic, the main body utilized generous amounts of high-gloss vinyl fabric. Visually, it popped amazingly on camera, but the trade-off was zero breathability. In particular, the black neck guard at the collar had rigid boning inside to support its structured shape, forcing me to maintain an upright, chin-up posture the entire day—lowering my head even slightly would jam against my chin. The shoulder pauldron assemblies on both flanks and the chest armor plates were crafted from rigid materials; without careful maneuvering, they could easily scrape passersby or nearby booth walls. Many of these armor connections relied on safety pins and snap buttons anchored to the base suit, so sitting in the car I didn't dare lean back, terrified that any pressure would snap the pins right off.
For makeup, to honor the character's demeanor, crimson contact lenses were paired with expansive blending of reddish eyeshadow and blush over a stark porcelain-pale base foundation. The ice-blue wig was trimmed to jaw length; because the tips flare easily, I used plenty of styling wax and freeze spray before heading out. Yet after simmering inside the car and hall all day, the bangs had wilted slightly and stray strands clung to my cheeks. Honestly, pairing such a dense wig with a high-neck collar makes sweating around the neck intensely uncomfortable.
Cosplaying alongside Xiangxiang was pure joy. While conventions are grueling, having a partner by your side to look out for each other completely transforms the experience. Putting on those intricate armor components required helping each other, and in the convention rest area, neither of us cared about keeping up appearances—holding each other's heavy shoulder armor while chugging ice water to cool down. Xiangxiang kept joking that our plugsuits were basically mobile saunas. Before the photographers, we strained to maintain our characters' cool, aloof poise, but the second the lenses pulled away, we immediately began trading complaints about sore calves and aching feet.
The shooting intensity on Day 1 was undeniably heavy, requiring constant adjustments to postures and poses. To embody Rei's signature serene detachment, even as fatigue set in, I focused hard on keeping my gaze locked and my posture tall whenever the camera aimed my way. Although wearing this plugsuit was an endurance test, the specular reflections and crisp textures under the Anime convention lighting left me thoroughly pleased, making every bit of effort worthwhile. The first order of business tonight is taking off the wig to detangle it thoroughly and treating the pressure marks on my skin. Day 2 is right around the corner tomorrow; I need to readjust the base layer's thickness and safety pin placements, packing extra bandages and sports drinks, hoping to power smoothly through the final stretch.
