This dark gothic style Rei Ayanami styling was shot during the National Day comic convention. Although everyone is most familiar with her classic plugsuit and school uniform, this time I tried a black-and-purple color-blocked lace halter mini dress. The sheer tulle fabric of the skirt body features a slight subtle sparkle with a great draping feel, adorned at the waist with purple-black 3D fabric flowers and edged with exquisite black lace. This design not only preserves the character's aloof feel but also adds a bit of a mature dark atmosphere. To match this outfit, I chose a black lace-trimmed headband that echoes the lace choker around the neck.
In terms of makeup and styling, to highly recreate Rei's iconic red eyes, I wore high-color-payoff red circle lenses. The eye makeup wasn't drawn too heavily; it mainly deepened the outer corners of the eyes, paired with light blue blunt-bangs short hair, making the gaze appear clearer yet carrying a touch of detachment. The base makeup pursued a fair texture, while the lip color chose a relatively pale nude shade, which better concentrates the visual focus on the eyes.
The lighting at the comic convention venue is actually quite complex, so the photographer cleverly utilized the on-site dark-toned background and blue-purple ambient lighting. We found a white long-plush rug as a prop and placed the subject on it, which not only brightened the overall frame but also formed a strong light-and-dark contrast with the dark skirt. In the low-light environment, we mainly used side-backlighting to outline the subject's shoulders, neck, and facial edges, making the skin emit a glowing feeling.
In pose guidance, when shooting standing up, I tried to keep my limbs relaxed and extended. For instance, crossing both hands in front of the chest, or gently supporting the chin, then slightly turning back to look at the lens, which wonderfully showcases the shoulder and neck lines alongside the hollow-back design. When shooting sitting on the ground, I utilized high heels to elongate the leg lines. A posture like one leg straight and the other slightly bent can showcase the side tailoring of the skirt while making proportions look more slender. Hands naturally propped on the ground or gently stroking the neck make the overall state appear more relaxed. The white blanket paired with the black-and-purple lace dress, along with black strappy peep-toe high-heeled sandals, left me extremely satisfied with the texture presented in the frame; this expression form with a slight gothic mystery is also another angle of my understanding of this character. In the noisy environment of the comic convention, finding that quiet, detached state of the character is extremely important, and it is also the key to maintaining the texture of the frame.
