This creation, "The Continuation of a Dream," originated from a brainstorm when I first stepped into the Nine-layered dreamscape Chongqing station. At first glance, seeing this scene with a clear sense of vintage items and complex lighting, I immediately felt it was incredibly suitable for the EVA atmosphere, especially for the cool, detached, yet slightly divine traits inherent in Rei Ayanami. This marked a wonderful start for our Chongqing cosplay journey.

After confirming the direction of the shoot, we focused most of our energy on shaping the light and shadow. The ambient light on-site was actually highly complex; both the top light and background reflections were heavy. If we wanted to create a holy and solemn feel like that of a church, we had to carefully control the exposure beforehand. For those sets of images in the clock room, we intentionally utilized the top rim light. This highlight fell right onto the character's veil and shoulders, forming a bright edge that stripped the character away from the dark background, instantly giving the frame a strong sense of staging and dramatic tension.

The makeup wasn't made overly complex, basically restoring the character's inherent clear transparency, with the key being to keep the gaze in a calm and ethereal state. This emotion is actually quite hard to capture because the ambient lighting is very cold. If the eyes carry even a bit of distraction, the entire work will look very dry, losing that unearthly mood. During the shoot, I tried my best to empty my mind, coordinating with the crucifix and candlestick in my hands to immerse myself in this suspended time.

Regarding the props in the scene, we actually made full use of every element. The clocks of various sizes on the room walls brought a powerful sense of "frozen time" to the space; the huge, headless angel statue behind deepened the religious and fatalistic meaning of the entire photo set. The draped white light gauze and flying birds in Photo 4 also served as excellent guiding lines. Combined with a soft side-backlight, they added a layer of light dreaminess to the frame. When shooting these shots, special attention had to be paid to the light transmittance of the gauze curtains, both to avoid the gauze looking dead white under strong light and to highlight its material texture.

To preserve overall realism, our post-processing editing mindset didn't intentionally pursue that highly bright, dazzling anime look. Instead, we preserved a vast amount of shadow detail, deliberately introducing brightness guidance only to core areas like the face, the crucifix, and the candlestick. The overall color tone was pulled slightly toward the cool color spectrum while retaining the grey scale, making the photo's texture look heavier and more cinematic. When shooting this set, special attention was also paid to the reflection effect of the floor. In the serene sitting posture of Photo 2, the mirror image and shadows on the ground gave the entire frame more layers and tranquility. This thoughtful approach added immense value to our final cosplay photography pieces.

Furthermore, this photo set actually challenged our comfort zone in light and shadow control. In an environment with an extremely large lighting ratio, if the light position moved even a tiny bit, the character's face would completely sink into the shadows, or the background highlights would completely blow out. Therefore, before every press of the shutter, we repeatedly adjusted the light to ensure the edges of the character and scene elements merged just right. For instance, the dangling chains in Photo 6 could easily turn into flat black lines under strong backlighting; we specifically added a bit of fill light to outline the texture of the chains, keeping the frame cleaner.

This shoot can be described as an exploration of spatial atmosphere and the character's core. Although the venue itself provided a certain amount of imagination, truly materializing this feeling still required tacit cooperation between photography and lighting. Maintaining a relaxed state when appearing on camera allowed me to find a sense of connection between the character and the space within this immersive setting of the Nine-layered dreamscape. Going through the entire process also gave me a deeper understanding of this character and this dark, cold style, and the presentation of this set of photos is indeed a highly ideal response to our initial brainstorm.
