Today at the Firefly ACG Expo venue, my partner and I teamed up to cosplay Rem and Emilia from Re:ZERO -Starting Life in Another World-. As the cosplayer presenting Rem cosplay, being able to collaborate and shoot together with Emilia made me extraordinarily happy. Rem's blue wig and maid outfit carry quite a lot of intricate details. To keep the hairstyle from losing its shape, I spent considerable time the night before styling it with hair wax and setting spray. Today's makeup also specifically emphasized the seamless blend between the blue contact lenses and the eye makeup to make the character look as faithful as possible. My partner cosplaying Emilia wore elf ears and a silver-white wig today; her outfit was even heavier and more layered than mine, yet we both pushed through to maintain our best state inside the exhibition hall.
Speaking of makeup, to prevent the base makeup from breaking down in the convention's sweltering environment, we used generous amounts of setting spray and loose powder. For the eye makeup, we blended blue and silver eyeshadow into a gradient, with white highlighting applied to the lower eyelids so the eyes would appear more dimensional under harsh lights. Regarding the wigs, Rem's short hair required layered trimming so the ends wouldn't feel bulky, whereas Emilia's long locks demanded extensive smoothing care to achieve a natural, flowing drape. These subtle nuances might not stand out immediately in photos, but for a cosplayer, they are crucial in defining authentic fidelity.
The lighting at the convention hall wasn't particularly friendly for photography, so we utilized the overhead ceiling lights as our primary light source, which actually yielded a surprisingly clear and translucent look. Because it was Firefly ACG Expo, the crowd was enormous, with photographers and passersby holding up cameras the entire time we were shooting. The bouquet of blue and white roses in our hands was a prop we prepared in advance, perfectly harmonizing with the color palettes of both characters. The fabric of the costume reflected slightly under the lights, so we avoided exaggerated color grading in post-production, striving instead to preserve the authentic on-site texture. As someone who cosplays frequently, wearing layered outfits at conventions is always a serious test of endurance—it's so easy to sweat in the summer heat—but seeing the finished photos made every bit of effort feel completely worthwhile.
Walking around the hall, our hemlines frequently brushed the floor, so we paid special attention to keeping the garments clean. Many photography enthusiasts came over asking for hall photos, and we gladly obliged while taking care not to dishevel the costumes or props. While touching up our makeup in the rest area midway through, we even ran into several fellow fans also cosplaying Re:ZERO -Starting Life in Another World-. Sitting together exchanging tips on wig maintenance and costume tailoring, that kind of convention camaraderie was truly heartwarming. From preparing garments and styling wigs to managing the venue temperature, every single step is a tangible reflection of our love for cosplay. While tidying our wigs in the rest area, my partner and I were still discussing how to refine facial contouring so that Emilia's purple eyes and Rem's blue eyes would shine even brighter on camera. Even though walking around the venue all day in high heels and voluminous skirts made the soles of our feet ache, all that exhaustion evaporated the moment the shutter clicked. If true love has a color, it must be blue. I truly cherished this time with my partner at Firefly ACG Expo, and I hope to continue bringing even better works next time!
