[Shenhe Cosplay] Genshin Impact Red Plum Blossoms in the Snow, the Crane's Shadow Descending into the Mortal Realm

When working on this "Red plum blossoms in the snow" look, my first impression was the complex sense of layering of this costume. The black and white off-the-shoulder design combined with the detached black arm sleeves, along with the unique red and white tassel pendant at the neckline, visually materialized and recreated Shenhe's original characteristics of being cool and elegant yet subtly charming.

In terms of wig processing, long silver-white hair easily looks frizzy. To restore the character's flowing feel, the retouchers and I made many adjustments to the hair strand texture and sense of flow. The upturned ahoge on the crown and the red tassel on one side are the keys to the visual balance of the entire hairstyle. There is also that pair of light purple colored contacts with rich color layers, which required constantly adjusting angles under different on-site light sources to present that faint, ethereal expression seen in the photos.

The set design for this shoot was very interesting; the production crew specially built an authentic Chinese traditional style classical indoor environment. Rosewood carved furniture, tea sets and pastries on the desk, the textures of the Chinese lattices on the background wall, and even that red porcelain vase with plum blossoms perfectly matched the artistic conception of "Red plum blossoms in the snow" and "the crane's shadow descending into the mortal realm." Especially for the shot sitting on the rosewood chair, through a large area of negative space and the deep tone of the rosewood, it immensely set off the bright colors of the white plush and red knots on the costume. Meanwhile, the material of the black tights presented a great luster under the reflection of the wooden furniture and soft light sources.

To me, the core of cosplay lies in capturing the character's expression even for just a single second. In Shenhe's perspective, there is often a hint of isolation and detachment from the world, but this is not completely cold. When post-processing combined the primitive filter of the background with my traditional Chinese elements clothing and accessories, a cross-dimensional serenity naturally emerged. For the post-processing color tone, we intentionally retained the brightness of the red elements in the frame, such as the plum blossoms on the table and the long tassels on the hair accessories, so as to form a visual contrast with the silver-white wig and highlight the character's vitality.

Regarding clothing materials, the white plush decorations at the cuffs and neckline were both a consideration for warmth and to add layers to the character's appearance. These fluffs seem heavy, but combined with the backless, off-the-shoulder, and black tights design, they actually achieved an excellent visual balance in line with currently popular Chinese-style photography aesthetics. It is neither as thin as summer clothes nor does it look bloated in front of the lens; instead, it adds an aura woven with fragility and coolness.

I am very satisfied with the final photos this time, and I want to specially thank photography teacher Vaandie for his control over light and shadow, as well as retouchers Bai Bai and San Mu for their detailed corrections. Chinese traditional style scenes place high demands on high light tolerance. If the lighting is too harsh, the character's silhouette will look stiff, destroying the overall softness; if it's too dark, the details of the silver hair and black tights will be lost. We repeatedly adjusted the position of the light sources on set multiple times before finally capturing this transparency. Moreover, the lighting beautifully outlined the lines of the off-the-shoulder and back skin, achieving a soft yet powerful effect.

When shooting characters with a massive amount of draping elements and tassels, subtle body micro-adjustments become very important. For example, when facing the lens, the angle of the elbows and whether the shoulders are relaxed will affect the communication of the overall temperament. I also tried my best to keep body lines smooth when holding props (such as books or wooden clipboards) to avoid letting excess power break the character's fragility and coolness. Besides the static sitting pose, the moment of turning around and looking sideways is also particularly vital. The swing of the hair strands and the tilt of the tassels need to be frozen at the exact moment the camera shutter clicks to convey that unique calm aura.

Being able to interpret my favorite Genshin Impact character in my own way and place it in such a set rich in Chinese traditional style charm is a very fulfilling thing. Although there might be details that aren't absolutely flawless, this set of works has already reached a level I highly anticipated in terms of scene selection, costume/makeup, and character state coordination. In this set, silver hair intertwines with red and black, cool and elegant. I truly hope this image in the lens can convey the unique charm of the character.
