This combination of a sailor uniform and blue-and-white tones, shot at a high outdoor location on a sunny day, was truly a fitting decision. The weather was exceptionally clear when shooting this photoshoot, which, combined with the clean and bright colors directly from Fuji SOOC, required almost no post-processing adjustments to perfectly deliver the clean, fresh feel intended for the frame.
The location was set on an open-air rooftop with a bright blue floor. The railings behind, the city buildings in the distance, the rolling green vegetation, and the faintly visible water surface formed a beautifully layered long shot. This background interweaving the city and nature blends perfectly with the character's own attributes—never detached from the mundane touch of real life, yet cleanly isolating the person from the surroundings through the background blur of a wide aperture, highlighting the character's subjectivity. For Outdoor photography, such an environment makes the shoot much smoother.
The costume kept the details of the original design as much as possible; the light blue short hair was custom-made, and adjusting the fluffiness of the twin bun structures on top took a good deal of time, which, paired with the iconic pink cross hairpins, creates sufficient recognizability from both frontal and profile views. The collar of the sailor uniform top is dark, matched with a white neckerchief, naturally bringing out the refreshing feel of summer attire. In fact, wearing uniform-type clothing has a characteristic of inherently bringing a sense of youth and vitality; as long as you stand or make some slight body movements, you can get into character very quickly.
The photographer Kiryu is truly adept at capturing the details of light. The strong light on the rooftop did not overexpose the frame, but instead shot the skin tone and the white of the clothes very softly. For bright outdoor photos like this, the character doesn't need to have overly complex expressions; simply maintaining a serene, quiet state transfers the calm temperament of this character much better. The high-rises in the background sharing the frame with a character in an Anime cosplay setting inherently creates a wonderful visual contrast where reality and anime intersect. The so-called 'anime is the magic of reality' is most prominently reflected in this kind of outdoor shoot.
Of course, there were some minor difficulties to overcome during the shooting process, such as the wig easily becoming messy on the windy rooftop, or the glaring sunlight making it a bit hard to keep eyes open. However, by adjusting the standing position a bit or slightly controlling the shooting angle, we could ultimately capture frames with great results. Because we chose the Fuji SOOC shooting approach this time, the control over color relied more on the on-site light and parameter settings during the shoot. In post-processing, I merely touched up the skin texture simply and unified the warm and cool tones of the frame, preserving the most primitive freshness.
Shooting by the water and on rooftops has another advantage: there are many blue elements in the frame, whether it's the blue sky, the water color, or the ground, including the character's own hair color, all forming an echo within the same color palette. The dark collar and pleated skirt serve as visual anchors, firmly grounding the subject of the portrait within the frame. The overall atmosphere of this photo set is very relaxing, just like the character's own personality; although she doesn't often occupy the center of the visual focus, as long as you see that touch of blue and the familiar sailor uniform, it instantly makes people feel that serenity belonging to summer.
