Let me share my convention photography lighting setup approach. I started playing with light arrays in July this year, and now it's been less than half a year, still in the exploration phase. My shooting style leans toward a soft light portrait look and a hazy vibe, pursuing that high-key look where figures seem to glow. The overall light architecture is mainly composed of four speedlights, using three Yongnuo 685s plus one Godox V850III, triggered via the Yongnuo system (cost control is quite good, but it occasionally misses flashes). Additionally, I equipped a Zhiyun M40 as a focusing assist.

The arrangement of light positions is the core that determines the texture of the frame. I simply simulated a four-dimensional layout in software: the main light hits from the front right side, combining with a soft umbrella to form a large area of diffuse reflection; the face light is placed in front, paired with a 90 softbox plus grids to ensure the face is soft and the light is controlled from spilling over; the top light has a 55-degree standard reflector stacked with a honeycomb grid, mainly concentrating the light beam on the top of the head and the surrounding space; finally, a strip softbox with grids is set up at the back as a rim light. Here is a small reference for power settings: the power ratio between the main light and the top light is controlled at about 2 to 1, with the main light set to 1/4 or 1/8, and the top light set to 1/2 or 1/4.

In a complex environment with high foot traffic like a convention, it doesn't matter if the raw image is slightly dark; the backlight is the most critical. As long as you pull up the backlight power, using high-power background light to strike through the hair strands, a halo will automatically light up around the contour edges of the figure, making the overall frame bright. Coordinated with the facial fill light, this lighting solution is exceptionally friendly to light-colored wigs and costumes.

The camera body I use is a Nikon D750, paired with a Tamron 24-70 f2.8. Daytime fixed parameters: color temperature 3800k, shutter speed 1/250s, aperture f3.2, ISO 100. This set of parameters is quite suitable for bright and cool-toned styles, with moderate contrast. If you want to quickly achieve that hazy soft-light effect, you can install a black mist filter in front of the lens during the early stage, which plays a great role in softening contrast, basically achieving a straight-out-of-camera effect. If the live light is too messy, leading to a less clean light effect, during post-processing, you can pull the clarity and dehaze parameters to negative values, and then use a glow plugin in PS to assist adjustment, which can play a similar role in strengthening the atmosphere for this soft light portrait creation.

The advantage of this setup is that the brightening effect on the figure's skin tone is obvious, making the face look white and the hair strands translucent. However, the disadvantages are also quite prominent. First, it has scene requirements: the venue must have a relatively dark ceiling environment to make the flash effect pop. Second, the background shouldn't be too cluttered; otherwise, the intense light will completely wash out the background details. After all, there are many interference factors at a live convention; when actually working, you need to flexibly adjust the light positions according to the character's costume material, positioning, and wall reflectivity, and definitely avoid rigidly applying a template. I am still continuously practicing to find the optimal solution in cosplay photography, and I will continue to try different light array combinations in the future.
