Before heading out for the shoot, the lens bag, reflector, garment steamer, sewing kit, and spare contact lenses were all stuffed into this black long bag by me. Just as mentioned in the post, they are indeed "good things" and are the life-saving straws required for every cosplay session.
Regarding some insights from this Asagi Mutsuki Cosplay session, let's chat briefly from makeup and styling to shooting. The most core part of Asagi Mutsuki's look is her white hair and red pupils, along with that red-and-black color-blocked uniform.
For the wig, I selected a long white straight wig this time. To align with the character design, I added extra elf ear accessories to enhance the character traits. The red pupils contact lenses were chosen to be quite translucent, which, paired with an outer layer smudge of pinkish eyeshadow, can neutralize the abruptness of overly deep pupils, making the gaze look both sharp like the character yet carrying a touch of playful glossiness.
The costume part is the heavy focus of this cosplay. The upper garment features a black short-cut double-breasted design, and the red collar edges and placket trimming are highly eye-catching, which, paired with golden buttons, increases the uniform feel. There is an exquisite golden badge embroidery on the left sleeve with very delicate details. The inner collared shirt and red-and-black striped small bowtie add layers, preventing the neck area from looking too empty. The lower body is a high-waisted pleated skirt dominated by red, with the skirt hem merging red-and-white plaid fabric and pressed with a layer of black lace trim, offering excellent layering and drape. This classic red and black combination is visually very full.
The location for shooting this set of photos was a deserted railroad in the suburbs. This place was chosen because its cold and hard industrial feel generates a wondrous chemical reaction with vibrant anime attire. The dusty gravel ground, rusted railroad tracks, and massive black steel structure bridges all serve as very natural backdrops. Color-wise, the environment is a large area of gray, black, and rust colors, while the character is a striking white, red, and black, so natural light can outline the main subject beautifully without requiring overly complex lighting. This makes it a perfect ACG outdoor location.
There are a few small interludes during the shooting process that I want to share with fellow fans. For example, the bag was very heavy. When executing the single-leg standing pose, my whole body was actually forcing myself to maintain balance. Just at that moment, the wind blew up the skirt hem, and the photographer captured a very natural dynamic moment. There is also the perspective of hands making double V-signs facing forward; this movement looks simple, but raising hands slightly higher or finding the right facial angle actually poses high requirements for camera sense. Keeping the face and glasses on the same plane allows the lens to better capture the bright, eye-catching reflection of the red pupils.
For the styling details, the boots are black thick-soled short boots with red trimming, a style that runs in the same line as the red and black elements of the skirt, making the distribution of color blocks across the entire body highly harmonious. Actually, some extra accessories were prepared this time, such as a few replacement small hairpins and weapon props, but to keep the frame clean, they weren't all brought out in the end. This is a bit of the small story behind this set of pictures and this "big black bag." For the weekend convention, I also plan to go out with this gear for some more Roleplay, and look for some beautiful light and shadow then. It was a wonderful practice of Cosplay photography.
