This waterside scene was a location we scouted in advance. The afternoon sun was exceptionally strong that day, but it was precisely this piercing backlight that made us decide to start shooting here. The main setting for this Violet Evergarden look is elegance and purity, so for the costume, I chose this dress dominated by white with light grey-blue edge lines.
There are actually many details in the entire styling. The white puff-sleeve top is paired with matching gloves and tall boots, along with a low bun hairstyle and a reddish-brown hair ribbon, keeping the overall color tone clean and unified in texture. The bouquet of pale pinkish-white little flowers in my hand was specially prepared by me because under intense backlight environments, the bouquet, besides echoing the character's temperament, can also add a touch of warm color to the frame, avoiding the monotony brought by a large area of pure white.
During the shoot, I didn't deliberately strike too many stiff poses, but mostly walked around and turned sideways naturally on the grass. The photographer's timing for candid shots was extremely precise; the first frame caught the shutter press exactly as a gentle breeze swept through, leaving the skirt hem in a very naturally lifted state. At that time, dappled light piercing through the gaps in the leaves scattered around, and combined with the lens flare, the entire atmosphere was directly brought to life. Many people said this photo has that life-defining masterpiece feel. In fact, a large part of it is credited to the light, wind speed, and angle at this exact moment. Indeed, if it were shifted to the next instant, even if the wind force changed just a bit, it might be impossible to capture a second frame that is completely identical.
The second profile shot changed the perspective, primarily showcasing the hairstyle silhouette, the layering on the back of the skirt hem, and my posture while holding the bouquet. This kind of heavy backlight environment poses extremely high demands on the photographer's exposure control—it must both avoid overall overexposure of the frame and keep the subject sufficiently illuminated to maintain a translucent feel. The bright rim light ultimately formed around the character's edges is beautiful, outlining the hair strands and clothing materials with great texture, making for a stunning backlit portrait.
Every time I prepare for a shoot like this, from purchasing props to outfit coordination, and then handling the muddiness and heat by the waterside on set, a lot of energy needs to be invested. However, when finally seeing these photos where light, shadow, composition, and the person's state merge just perfectly, I feel all the prior preparations were fully worth it. The turnout of this photoset is very close to the freshness and dreaminess we initially desired, and I am writing down these records here to preserve that focused yet relaxed state during this session of cosplay photography.
