[Patchouli cosplay] Touhou Project: Daily Life of the Scarlet Devil Mansion Magician in the Library

Freshly finished with retouching, I'm sharing this Patchouli cosplay set from the Scarlet Devil Mansion library right away.

In terms of styling, I chose a classical Lolita dress interwoven with black, purple, and white—featuring cascading lace trims, a ruffled neckline, a voluminous bonnet headpiece with dimensional bows, and those highly recognizable slender wire-rimmed glasses, doing my best to recreate the aura of this Scarlet Devil Mansion magician. In terms of details, a puffy petticoat was added to the skirt, paired with a Black tights outfit of sheer black stockings and black lace-up heels. This combination not only flatters the lower body proportions, but also echoes the character's elegant, slightly aloof demeanor from lingering in the library. Before the shoot, I carefully styled the wig; the pale purple strands were trimmed with delicate layers so that wearing them under such an ornate headpiece wouldn't flatten the crown, preserving an airy feel. While the color palette might seem complex, it looked exceptionally photogenic on camera.

The scene was the true centerpiece of this shoot. The studio constructed an entire towering wall of books as the backdrop, filled with all kinds of hardcover spines. A mahogany desk, vintage metallic globe, desk lamp with a lace shade, and an antique phonograph were tastefully arranged across the tabletop. Although the wall wasn't particularly wide, the sheer height of the bookshelves, the ambient lighting, and the low-angle wide lens distortion made the space feel remarkably expansive. Stepping onto this set, without much direction needed, I naturally wanted to flip through the books on the desk or pick up the magnifying glass to examine their contents—the character immersion was immediate and profound. The magnifying glass and heavy ancient grimoires became key interactive props; whether holding a bookmark in one hand or using the magnifying glass to inspect diagrams in a book, these organic gestures fit the lore seamlessly.

Huge thanks to the photographer for their dedication. The color grading, leaning toward warm amber and brown tones, endowed the indoor lighting with a rich vintage texture, while the polished floor reflections enhanced the spatial depth and three-dimensionality of the frame. Beyond foundational framing and camera work, the photographer specifically captured detailed close-ups of holding books and the magnifying glass, making the entire series resemble a narrative art book. There were certainly challenges during the shoot: maintaining a seated reading posture for long periods and micro-adjusting hand and gaze angles with the magnifying glass required constant verification before hitting the shutter to avoid unnatural angles or stiff movements. The heeled shoes required a bit of balance control on the slick reflective floor, but the overall execution turned out quite well.

Due to the character concept, the overall ambiance of this shoot is quiet and restrained, without large, dynamic movements, relying primarily on eye expressions, subtle facial cues, and prop interactions to convey her intellectual side. When the final photos came out, the overall texture matched my expectations—and even exceeded my initial vision. From costume preparation to shooting on set, the entire process took over a dozen hours. Though tiring, being able to immerse myself in the character within such a classical, vintage environment was the greatest reward outside of daily life. As a long-time fan of Touhou Project and its lore, having the opportunity to create such a magnificent Scarlet Devil Mansion-themed shoot is a dream come true.
