Opening these finished photos brings back memories of our shoot nestled among the blooming Thunberg spirea bushes that day. A great deal of thought went into bringing this Japanese-style furisode shoot for Asuka and Rei Ayanami from Neon Genesis Evangelion (EVA) from concept to execution.

First, regarding the costumes: rather than EVA's iconic plugsuits, we opted for traditional furisode kimonos. Asuka's vibrant red furisode featured intricate white and pink floral under-patterns, tied with an opulent gold-brocade obi, creating an impassioned, flamboyant aesthetic true to her outgoing nature. Rei Ayanami's attire was set against a soft white-and-pink ground with butterfly motifs and gilded line-work, exuding a cool, ethereal gentleness. Standing together, their red-and-white contrast was striking. In terms of hair ornaments, scarlet floral tassels brought regal grandeur to Asuka, while Rei's signature blue locks were paired with white blossoms and golden accents to stay faithful to her original character palette.

The location was chosen in a thick grove of blooming Thunberg spirea. The cascade of delicate white blossoms and green foliage formed a natural backdrop, ideal for evoking a dreamy yet bittersweet ambiance. Photographer Bubu has an exceptional eye for angles; in the first frame, we reclined half-submerged in the blooms, using branching twigs as foreground elements to frame us right at the center. As the sunlight broke through, the contrast between Rei's blue eyes and Asuka's fiery red pupils emerged vividly. That random meme—'In the end... you're not my Rem after all'—kept echoing in my head; though completely unrelated to Neon Genesis Evangelion, that subtle emotional distance resonated nicely with the complex dynamic between Asuka and Rei. Meanwhile, jokingly teasing 'Hey pet favorite, why do you pilot EVA anyway?' during shooting breaks created a fun, ironic contrast against the soft tenderness of these furisode portraits.

The second overhead reclining composition was decided on a whim—lying back among the blossoms as sunlight filtered through leafy branches, dappling our faces and kimonos with soft chiaroscuro. To enrich details, we placed decorative butterfly props across ourselves and the ground. Posing recumbent tested facial muscle control; holding Rei Ayanami's signature half-closed eyes and soft, shallow breathing required prolonged adjustment. Asuka raising her hand added dynamic kinetic flow to the stillness. Such duo interaction demands seamless synergy: even leaning gently together risks looking stiff if posture isn't just right.

As a cosplayer who frequently creates content for EVA, this furisode rendition is one of my personal favorites. It strips away the heavy industrial edge of mechanical mechas, yet communicates each character's distinct disposition through fabric weaves and set design. Many spirea petals drifted naturally into our hair during the shoot; we intentionally left them untouched, letting that organic touch enhance the authenticity of the final frames. From hair and makeup styling to wardrobe and scenery, every step underwent thorough review to bring a fresh visual perspective to fans of these characters.

Special thanks to my partner for our flawless teamwork, and to our photographer for their patient guidance. Achieving this soft, exquisite tactile quality in the finished work was truly the fruit of our shared dedication.
