Browsing through old photos on my hard drive, this set of Asuka Cosplay photos was taken several years ago. Back then, we chose to shoot on a vast lawn under the midday summer sun. Scorched by the blazing heat, I felt a bit dazed and my makeup was almost melting off, entirely getting through it on sheer unyielding stubbornness in that moment. Looking back at these raw shots now, what felt imperfect back then due to equipment and technical limitations has instead turned into a unique sense of era. Sorting and recoloring them this time was mainly to recapture that nostalgic color feel around 2015. Digital camera image quality back then had a distinct flavor—warm-toned, slightly blown-out highlights, high saturation in the sky and grass, carrying a filter-like vibe unique to that era. Following the tones in my memory, I slightly raised the contrast and adjusted the ratio between yellow and blue, attempting to restore the memory of that summer afternoon. Speaking of the character Asuka, viewers familiar with Neon Genesis Evangelion know her competitive nature—an age that could least accept failure. At first glance, one might just think she is prickly, but later one gradually understands that this fear of failure is essentially an extreme yearning for recognition and independence. When shooting this set back then, I was actually at a very similar age, facing the pressures of academics and life. Some of those slightly stubborn and reluctant expressions in front of the lens now look like the most authentic emotional reveal. This outfit is Asuka's classic student uniform, a styling EVA fans can recognize at a glance: a white shirt paired with a blue jumper skirt, along with a red bow tie and hair clips. During the shoot, I paid attention to subtle placement details, like the pose of holding the skirt edge and the gaze looking up at the lens, hoping to recreate the feel of the original design as much as possible. The third photo was a candid shot taken while crouching on the grass rummaging through my bag—I was actually preparing to find makeup to touch up, but the photographer's shutter just happened to capture that natural movement, which now looks much more authentic than deliberate posing. Reorganizing this photo set feels like a conversation across time with myself. Doing cosplay is not just restoring a 2D character's appearance, but also taking time to experience the character's mindset at that moment. For Asuka, being unable to accept failure is both armor and vulnerability. For me today, these old photos instead exude a pure, youthful innocence. Slowly retouching the photos, I feel like I've regained that single-minded dedication from back then, devoting time and energy solely for a beloved character. Every reflection in the photos and every trace of grass seem to tell the story of that summer. Looking at this set now, there are many technical flaws, but it is precisely these imperfections that constitute warm memories. Consider this a silent archive of days gone by.
