This original Gothic-style Rei Ayanami setting is a set of photoshoot photos I prepared with special care recently. The photographer was Hamster King (仓鼠大王), shot in Changsha. We settled early on this cold-toned, dark-space ritualistic aesthetic.
When finalizing the makeup and styling, the first problem to solve was pairing the wig with the contact lenses. The light blue short hair with straight bangs serves as the character's visual anchor. To avoid a stiff look, I didn't cut the bangs completely straight, leaving a light airy feel so her gaze could show some depth in front of the lens. I chose reddish-brown contacts, which placed against the blue hair and pale cool skin immediately brightened the eyes, giving form to that cold yet slightly vacant gaze.
For the costume, I drew from Gothic element treatments. A white lace strapless long dress formed the base, worn with lace mesh long gloves. Most thought went into designing the choker and veil. The cross choker used a soft-light silver ornament on a white base, and the long rosary beads held in hand shared the same texture. The veil was made of a very light, fluffy sheer mesh with great drape and airiness, forming natural folds and shadows when blown by the wind.
Regarding lighting on the day of the shoot, we mainly used a cold light source positioned slightly off-center directly from above. This provided even facial lighting while creating high contrast, brightening the white outfit and letting the dark blue background fade into shadows to accentuate the character's silhouette. This look demanded high standards of posture; because the outfit itself is light, a loose stance wouldn't hold down the gravity of the Gothic style. Thus, I deliberately controlled my neck and shoulder lines during shooting, keeping my arms in a gentle curve and adding narrative depth through hand gestures—such as softly holding up the veil, gripping the rosary, or resting fingertips on the collar.
Blending Rei Ayanami's cold character from the original series into a Gothic tone required a delicate sense of proportion. You couldn't play her with too much aggression; you had to maintain that isolated, ethereal feel while delivering an interpretation imbued with personal understanding. This photoshoot was both a character cosplay and an attempt at emotional expression. There were no overly exaggerated body movements throughout; the focus was on subtle expressions and hand details. After finishing this set, I understood the charm of an original character setting even better—it allows us to sculpt our ideal vision onto the framework of the original work.
The Changsha cosplay photoshoot booking process went very smoothly. The photographer understood well how to capture this beauty that blends static and dynamic elements. Shooting indoors in high temperatures, we styled the wig in advance to maintain its shape, making subsequent touch-ups relatively easy. We subtracted from the makeup: besides a translucent base, the eyeshadow used matching cool tones, and the lip color was just thinned and brightened to reduce the dominance of facial cosmetics, highlighting the contrast between the red contacts and pale skin. The photographer's on-site guidance was precise, helping me enter the original setting's emotional state quickly.
Under the strong cold light, the white lace material cast a faint blue glow. This refraction gave the overall image a very clear, clean transparency. Throughout the process, I didn't force any poses; every photo was a natural response to the camera, lighting, and character tone. I hope everyone can see a different side of how I handle this character—this is what I enjoy most as a cosplayer during the creative process.
