From the initial planning to the final shoot, creating this Neon Genesis Evangelion Asuka and Rei Ayanami school uniform duo project was full of chemistry and fun. The styling created a sharp color contrast—the red and blue wigs paired with matching colored contacts brought a strong visual impact to the frame. We put a lot of thought into the makeup, focusing on eye details. To capture the characters' traits, we went through multiple trials with false eyelash application, eyeliner direction, and the natural blending of blush and lip color.
Styling Asuka's twin-tail wig was quite time-consuming, and the red and black hair ties gave the hairstyle a stronger three-dimensional look. Rei Ayanami's blue short hair felt much lighter, showing wonderful depth under the light. We paired them with classic white shirts, blue jumper dresses, and red ribbon ties; putting on these uniforms instantly brought back that nostalgic campus vibe.
The fortune slip pun in the second photo was an idea that came to us during a break. Drawing a good fortune slip was exciting on its own, so we held up the wooden slips together in front of the camera to capture this bit of luck in the most natural way. This candid interaction also made the shoot feel very relaxed.
The third photo was the most challenging creative shot of this session—using physical alignment with a smartphone screen to achieve a half-face split effect. The hand had to remain perfectly steady, and the camera angle had to align seamlessly with the 2D character's lower face on the phone screen. We spent a long time fine-tuning the angle to achieve a flawless fusion between the real face and the screen image. When the final photo came out, that magical, seamless transition between reality and the 2D world made every adjustment and retake completely worth it.
Compared to the plugsuits, the school uniform version feels less heavy and tense, highlighting more of the characters' youthful and everyday charm in a campus setting. The rhythm of shooting with my partner was very harmonious; we searched for the best angles through our interactions, striving to capture the best expressions with every shutter click. Although the preparation involved many tedious details, seeing the satisfying final photos made all the effort pay off. This set records the shared effort and creativity of both of us, making it a truly enjoyable cosplay shoot experience.
