[Rei Ayanami Cosplay] Neon Genesis Evangelion: Changsha Menghua Anime Expo Cosplay Convention Photos Log

The cosplay convention photos from the Changsha Menghua Anime Expo are finally sorted out! This time, I chose the classic blue-and-white school uniform styling of Rei Ayanami from Neon Genesis Evangelion. Since this was the very last set of photos shot at the end of the convention, I was actually already quite exhausted, but this slightly quiet and zoned-out state unexpectedly fit the character's own temperament perfectly.

Let's talk about the costume and styling preparation first. For the wig, I selected an ice-blue short wig, with the bangs and ends trimmed slightly afterwards to ensure a clean and crisp edge. For the outfit, the white sailor-collar short-sleeved shirt was paired with a light blue pinafore dress, and the bright red bow tie at the collar served as the visual focal point. To maintain the drape and structure of the skirt hem, the fabric chosen had a subtle shimmer, which beautifully caught the natural reflections under the complex light sources at the convention. On my lower half, I paired black mid-calf socks with white casual sneakers, striving to recreate the character's slightly sporty yet detached school-life daily atmosphere.

The photographer for this set of photos is Daochang. We found a relatively quiet corner in the exhibition setup area. Although the background still showed on-site softboxes, fences, and other attendees, Daochang used a telephoto lens and a wide aperture to successfully blur the background into a soft bokeh, highlighting the subject. Midway through, I used a vintage brown leather handbag as a prop; its stiff contours and metal buckles provided a great texture contrast against the school uniform fabric.

For the poses, we didn't force any intense dramatic conflict or grand movements, opting instead for a highly natural, introspective presentation. The shot in Image 1 where I am standing with my eyes closed is one of my personal favorites. Hands gently crossed in front of me, head slightly bowed, with no need to look directly at the camera—that relaxed yet slightly lonely emotion emerged naturally. Image 2 features a composition sitting on a high stool, legs naturally crossed, holding the leather handbag in front of me. This angle beautifully showcases the overall coordination and the details of the black socks. The telephoto lens also did wonders in making the character's silhouette look very slender.

Image 3 is a snapshot of me kneeling on a white plush rug later on. Since the convention floor is quite hard, the plush rug did a great job of relieving fatigue during the shoot while adding a touch of softness to the frame. Leaning my body slightly forward, with my left hand resting naturally near the collar and my right hand reaching out forward, I stared straight into the lens. This motion is almost like trying to touch or invite something, capturing a static yet interactive moment. The last full-body shot sitting in a corner was voted by everyone as the most fitting for the character's mood. Curling my legs up and burying my face between my arms is a posture that reflects a profound lack of security or being entirely immersed in one's own world. The black socks and white sneakers formed a sharp color contrast at the bottom of the frame, which, paired with the ice-blue hair, made the cool, melancholy atmosphere absolutely perfect.

During the process of shooting this set, I kept reflecting on the core of 'Rei Ayanami.' Many viewers in the comments say 'Rei Ayanami is Rei Ayanami,' a phrase that holds a deep appreciation for the character's soul. As a cosplayer at a convention, you not only need to achieve accuracy in appearance, but also need to convey that signature atmosphere through your demeanor and gestures. Some might find Rei Ayanami cold, but in truth, that coldness wraps around a pure quietness. No noise, no pandering—just quietly existing there. This shoot beautifully captured that aura.

Lastly, a massive thank you to photographer Daochang for patiently setting up the lights and adjusting angles even during my exhausted state at the end of the convention, resulting in these highly textured convention photos. The atmosphere at Changsha's conventions is always incredibly enthusiastic. Being able to complete a dedicated character recreation in such an anime-style photography environment is highly fulfilling. Whether through live snapshots or meticulously composed close-ups, every frame recorded a specific moment, and I hope these convention photos pass this quiet atmosphere on to all of you.
