Cosplaying Marisa at Guangzhou CPSP this time, my greatest takeaway was an extreme sense of contrast. The convention was packed with crowds, and I was in full social-anxiety mode, yet the actual photographing process was surprisingly relaxing. The scenes we chose were actually a grassy slope by the roadside and under a nearby overpass, without deliberately seeking out complex backgrounds. This open setting with modern architectural lines unexpectedly clashed with the character's classic magician archetype to create an intriguing visual impact. Master Yenai's posing direction was exceptionally spot-on—such as positioning the broom's long handle so it didn't look casually held, or angling the octagonal box toward the lens to create spatial perspective; adjusting these details instantly brought dramatic visual tension to the photos.
Preparing the costume also took plenty of effort. The lace on the wide hat brim was quite heavy, so I secured it firmly with bobby pins to keep the wind from blowing it away. The star decorations on the skirt hem and the purple ribbon bows tended to flip during shooting, requiring frequent readjustments—not only to maintain the costume, but also to ensure visual perfection in the photos. The row of gold buttons down the chest caught the backlight with fantastic texture, and the patterns on the apron were delicate. The hairstyle featured long blonde braids with straight bangs; wearing this wig for a long duration caused slight scalp soreness, but for character fidelity, it was entirely bearable.
As someone with social anxiety, pulling off exaggerated facial expressions or grand poses in front of a camera is quite tough, so this session mostly featured low-angle shots, standing sideways, or sitting on the curb. In particular, that photo standing beneath the massive steel structure looks cool and confident, but inside I was terrified of random passersby wandering into the frame. Luckily, the photographer was incredibly patient, waiting for me to settle into the zone while teaching me how to relax my shoulders and enliven my gaze. Having done several shoots before, I knew one shouldn't just stare blankly at the lens, but actively interact with it. For instance, when bringing the box close to the camera, distance control was key—too close blurs the focus, while too far loses the dramatic effect; Master Yenai was tremendously helpful with this.
In reality, it's often like this: anime conventions are massive, and everyone finds joy in their own corner. Even though I curled up in my corner fighting social anxiety, producing work I love in such an atmospheric setting made the trip truly worthwhile. The visual quality of this outfit grows on you the more you look at it. Reviewing the photos, the well-balanced lighting and harmonious color grading were a delightful surprise. For this type of Convention photos and Anime-style photography approach, I personally find it very comfortable—there's no need to chase lavish studio backdrops when natural foliage and architectural lines can accentuate the character's traits effortlessly. There was also a small interlude: being close to the road, occasional gusts of breeze lifted the skirt hem, requiring continuous burst shooting at dialed-in angles to capture natural movement, which ultimately endowed the photos with a vibrant, lively charm.
