Preparing for this Soul Land Ning Rongrong cosplay took quite a while. I've always loved Ning Rongrong's gentle yet slightly tsundere personality, so I aimed to recreate the soft, luxurious aesthetic seen in the manhua when selecting the costume and wig.
Ever since receiving the wig, I did extensive work on this long pink hair. To comfortably fit the lace hairpiece and frame my face shape, I re-trimmed the bangs and sideburns to ensure a clear, innocent gaze on camera when paired with purple contact lenses. The hair accessories for this set were intricate: combining white lace with yellow floral accents required careful pinning atop my head to maintain a full, three-dimensional silhouette while standing, without feeling overly heavy when turning my head.
My partner cosplayed Oscar (Oscar cosplay), whose messy light-purple hair and green contact lenses were incredibly eye-catching. In Soul Land, this Oscar and Ning Rongrong duo exhibits a stark personality contrast: Ning Rongrong is the young lady of the Seven Treasure Glazed Tile Sect—elegant with an assertive edge—while Oscar remains by her side with an easygoing, playful demeanor. During shooting, we played into this dynamic: he naturally struck a peace sign with a cheeky expression, while I, dressed in a pale yellow off-the-shoulder dress paired with white lace gloves, struck balanced poses ranging from elegant to playful.
The shooting ambient light today was exceptionally soft. Natural light filtering through arched windows behind us, coupled with potted greenery nearby, gave the frame a natural, cozy atmosphere free of artificial studio stiffness. In cosplay photography, warm-toned natural lighting heavily tests exposure control; fortunately, managing exposure accurately during capture preserved the lace's delicate layering even in close-up portraits. Key elements of Ning Rongrong's outfit are the puff sleeves and choker; to keep the neck from looking bare, I layered a lace choker with a color-matched necklace to refine the overall look.
My partner's Oscar outfit—a black vest layered over a white shirt accented with silver chains—retained core character elements while fitting modern casual aesthetics seamlessly without feeling jarring on set. We agreed to focus facial management on quiet mutual understanding between characters, foregoing exaggerated gestures in favor of subtle eye contact or the understated chemistry of standing side by side.
Naturally, we faced several minor challenges during shooting. Keeping hair accessories stable meant minimizing head movements, and lace garments wrinkle easily, requiring frequent breaks every few shots to smooth out sleeve bows. Although the wig was pre-styled, moving around indoors created stray hairs that needed constant checking against monitor playbacks. Yet seeing the final images made every effort worthwhile. This is the true joy of cosplay: it's not merely putting on an outfit, but working together as a team to construct an authentic moment straight from the anime realm.
As a Ning Rongrong cosplayer, I hope to share this passion for Soul Land with fellow fans. Portraying a renowned character always brings a touch of nervous anticipation, as fans hold high expectations and deep interpretations. Therefore, I referenced official artwork and manhua details closely in my makeup, focusing eye makeup on brightening and enlarging eyes while blending soft contouring across nose shadows and blush to achieve a sweet, aristocratic maiden look on camera.
Though indoor shooting offers limited conditions, communicating with our photographer allowed us to alternate between close-ups and half-body compositions to maximize facial expressions and costume detailing. The outfit's fabric quality performed wonderfully—tailored drapery folds and lace direction refined silhouette contours elegantly. My partner brought great initiative, posing comfortably before the camera and guiding interactive gestures to keep the shooting rhythm fluent. The final result honors the original character settings while showcasing our personal interpretation.
Completing this Ning Rongrong and Oscar photoshoot with such a wonderful partner was a deeply fulfilling experience. We both strove to embody our characters' authentic aura so that Soul Land fans would smile with recognition. This session gave me fresh inspiration for cosplay: when you meticulously prepare every detail and treat every character with sincerity, photos naturally project genuine resonance—that is the true magic of cosplay.
