Shooting Varesa in the dead of winter, I thought my fiery passion would carry me through—I genuinely didn't register the biting chill the entire time, my mind wholly consumed by holding poses and maintaining character expressions. It wasn't until reviewing the camera previews that I noticed my bare legs were flushed bright crimson from the freezing cold; numb to it in the moment, I crashed the very next day with a severe cold that knocked me out of commission for two whole weeks. Naturally, photo deliveries were delayed by two weeks as well.
The accessories on this set were an absolute headache: adhesive bonds were shockingly flimsy and surprisingly heavy. Halfway through walking the trail, one of the beast ears detached and fell off, leaving me no choice but to scoop it up and jam it back in clumsily. The horns were an even bigger disaster—completely unstable, tilting askew with the slightest gust of wind. I spent the entire shoot paralyzed by anxiety that they would take a dive, reaching up every two frames to tap my head and verify they were still attached, which threw off the entire shooting rhythm.
The Pink wig had originally been squished flat into a cardboard brick in transit, utterly unwearable. The night before, I had to stage an emergency cosplay prop repair, laboring into the early hours with a hair straightener, conditioning mist, and detangling combs just to make it marginally presentable. When cameras rolled the next morning, several sections still fell awkwardly unnatural.
On set, Zhuo-chan and I constantly cheered each other on; despite the barrage of mishaps, the overall atmosphere remained genuinely joyful. However, prolonged exposure outdoors is ruthless on the body. I kept gritting my teeth and pushing through, convinced that capturing striking frames made everything worthwhile.
Looking back at the unedited files now, the mottled red frost marks across my skin and along the White leg warmers are glaringly obvious, which means post-production cleanup is going to require immense time and effort. That is precisely why I've procrastinated on retouching until now—I simply dread confronting the mountain of blemishes that need patching. Nonetheless, since the shoot is wrapped, I wanted to share these fun behind-the-scenes snippets with Zhuo-chan first. I was definitely 'not cold at all'! While this Varesa Cosplay journey was fraught with chaos, it was an unforgettable trial. Next time around, I will rigorously prioritize winter warmth and reinforce every single prop anchor before stepping out.
