[Patchouli Cosplay] Touhou Project's Witch is Indeed Quite Different from What's Written in the Books

Looking at this set of photos, my first feeling is that the lighting and atmosphere are genuinely different from the usual Patchouli photoshoots.

Many people's impression of Patchouli is the image of her sitting quietly in the library reading a book, but when communicating with the photographer this time, we wanted to break that stereotype. For prop preparation, I specifically chose a stack of heavy old books. The black lace-up dress paired with a large area of purple fabric and white ruffled lining creates a black-purple-white palette that reflects Patchouli's essence while visually lengthening body proportions.

Let's talk about the state on the day of the shoot first. This outfit actually has a lot of details, especially the lacing on the arms and waist, which takes some effort to adjust. However, the final look after putting it on is very satisfying—with the fluffy skirt, custom purple bow headpiece, and gold-rimmed glasses, it instantly feels like reading ancient books in Gensokyo. The biggest challenge during the shoot was sitting comfortably on that stack of books. Books are naturally uneven and vary in height. To find my balance, my feet were completely suspended, relying entirely on core strength to stay balanced while striking good poses and holding the book naturally. My knees were a bit sore after the shoot.

Many were curious about where those floating lights in the background came from. In fact, it was created on-site using smoke cakes and light diffuse reflection, with slight color adjustments in post-processing to make the entire frame look like magic is flowing. For the lighting in this photo, we deliberately dimmed the environment, relying on a single overhead key light to illuminate my hair and skirt. This made the purple of the dress look remarkably pure and dreamlike, while nicely outlining the texture of the black stockings cosplay.

Speaking of the character herself, although Patchouli from Touhou Project is sickly, her profound knowledge and heavy magic lore are fascinating. What I wanted to convey through this set of photos is a sharper, powerful elegance rather than a simple sense of frail illness. Perhaps because of this, it feels "quite different from what's written in the books."

There were also many fun little anecdotes during the shoot. For example, to keep the skirt intact, I had to constantly make sure not to step on my own hem. Also, those glasses reflected light easily, so the photographer tried many angles to avoid glare. Although the process was exhausting, seeing the raw photos made it feel totally worth it—the image of that streak of long purple hair fluttering in the wind had real visual tension in person.

Sometimes after doing a lot of witch cosplay, you want to add a bit of your own ideas on top of faithful recreation. This time, wearing black stockings cosplay and Gothic style cosplay outfit is not only a recreation of the character, but also feels like my own little secondary creation of the Touhou Project worldview. I hope to take more textured, personal-style photos like this in the future, living up to every morning spent dressing up and every night spent editing photos.
