When shooting this Priestess cosplay, the first thought in my mind was to find a heavy industrial style location to complement her intellectual yet mysterious setting. The massive orange-yellow mechanical structure in the frame serves as a background, which perfectly counteracts the everyday feel brought by the white shirt and black miniskirt, instantly bringing the overall atmosphere into Arknights' worldview filled with machinery and the unknown.
Regarding the choice of clothing, I specially picked a white shirt with a slightly crisper texture. Since it involved sitting down for the shoot, a fabric that is too soft would easily generate too many irregular wrinkles, making it look less neat. The headband paired with long straight hair is a highly iconic element of Priestess. When combing it, I intentionally preserved some natural drape. During the shoot, a sudden gust of wind blew up a few strands of hair; capturing this candidly actually gave it more breathing room than a forced pose.
Light and shadow were aspects I cared deeply about during this shoot. The main light source on set leaned towards warm tones, beautifully outlining a soft facial contour on my face, which formed a powerful contrast of warm and cool with the cool cyan of the background metal. I specially asked the photographer to use a wide aperture to darken part of the background, stripping away the clutter of this industrial structure to ultimately present an Industrial style portrait texture that is a bit sci-fi yet slightly vintage. As for props, it's just this thin pink folder. It actually doesn't have particularly complex details, but placed in such a scene, it feels as if it will truly be flipped open to record some crucial information the very next second.
Actually, during the process of a Cosplay photoshoot, I really love this process of placing characters into specific environments to blend with them. The character Priestess always gives off a quiet, firm, yet secret-carrying feeling in the story, so I didn't make too many exaggerated expressions during the shoot, immersing myself more in the state of an observer. Although the industrial style venue itself is very rough, through the arrangement of angles and lighting, this ruggedness instead brings out the character's slenderness and quietness more vividly. The post-processing retained many of the metal's original wear-and-tear marks, avoiding making the frame overly polished and losing the authenticity of the scene.
If there could be a quiet place, paired with a bit of the sound of wind blowing, it would probably be this kind of atmosphere. This Cosplay photoshoot was something I was highly invested in; it is not only a replication of this character but also my personal attempt at combining environment with character emotions. The process of sorting out this record itself feels as if I sat quietly with her for a while. Thanks to my photographer for patiently finding angles and transforming this sense of oppression brought by heavy industry into a narrative feel within the light and shadow.
