For this custom Rei Ayanami cosplay photoshoot, the biggest challenge was how to break away from her classic plugsuit and standard short-hair look while still preserving her signature vulnerability and sense of distance. To achieve this custom aesthetic, I chose a white lace Custom western dress paired with a ruffled white lace headband and silver ribbon bows. The White lace choker around the neck, accented with a cross and pearl chain, further enhanced the cool, pristine color palette. For makeup, I specifically chose a light blue short wig and paired it with translucent red contact lenses (Red eyes, blue hair), emphasizing lower lashes and the aegyo sal. This styling greatly softened the touch of reality, making me resemble a delicate porcelain doll. The plush toy in my hands was styled according to my custom concept—with royal blue hair and red eyes, like a miniature version of myself.
Preparing on the day of the shoot was quite intricate, mainly to maintain the fluffiness of the wig and keep the headpiece securely in place, avoiding large movements that might disrupt the serene ambiance. Throughout the shoot, I tried keeping a blank, vacant expression and used body language to convey this emotion. My most direct takeaway from this shoot is that infusing abundant lace and soft elements into an aloof character creates a very different aura, giving me fresh perspectives on photography. Delivering high-quality cosplay requires upfront makeup design, careful fabric selection, and smooth post-production synergy with the photographer. This custom concept demanded extreme attention to detail—not only preserving character recognition, but also balancing personal wearing comfort with visual appeal. Since I selected a very delicate pure white outfit, we paid close attention to ambient light reflections during the shoot to prevent overexposure and loss of fabric details. Looking back on the whole journey, photography is an expression of love for a character, and sharing this outfit is meant to show more possibilities without confining a character's aesthetic to rigid boundaries.
