For this Evangelion group photoshoot, I cosplayed Asuka. The location was set beneath a massive modern concrete bridge; the heavy piers, thick steel cables, and overcast gray sky created a chilly industrial environment that matched the slightly oppressive yet mechanical ambiance of Neon Genesis Evangelion perfectly.
To harmonize with this setting, I deliberately accentuated the character's sharp intensity in styling. The long red hair was very eye-catching, which, paired with iconic red gloves and a black leather skirt, formed a bold contrast against the dim background. The over-the-knee Black stockings cosplay had a great texture under overcast natural light, and combined with black high heels and the leather skirt, effectively elongated leg lines. During the shoot, we utilized the concrete retaining wall—some sitting, some standing—to create spatial depth through staggered heights. Photographer @Alma was exceptionally skilled at using these imposing architectural lines for composition, and the full-screen vertical framing captured everyone's leg lines and emotional states spot-on.
What impressed me most during the shoot was the colored thread sequence. Each person held a thread of a different color, crisscrossing one another; against the cool black-and-gray backdrop, vibrant colors like red, yellow, green, and blue suddenly sprang to life, making the bonds between us tangible. As Asuka, I needed to convey that stubborn yet vulnerable state through my gaze and gestures. The other cast members collaborated with great synergy—Rei Ayanami cosplay, Shinji, Kaworu, and others all delivered their best performances in their respective positions. The hardest part was holding our poses while waiting for the exact moment when the wind blew our hair. In post-processing, the raw, cool-toned texture was preserved rather than edited into an overly bright Japanese aesthetic, because that cool tone best suited the ambiance of this scene. After several hours of shooting, despite the freezing cold under the viaduct, seeing these high-quality photos made everything feel completely worthwhile.
