[Maomao and Jinshi Cosplay] The Apothecary Diaries: Backlit Moments in a Serene Grove

These two photos document an outdoor scene shoot we completed for the characters Maomao and Jinshi from The Apothecary Diaries. Upon planning the shoot, our primary task was refining costume details. Maomao's outfit utilizes a multi-layered structure, featuring a pale pink wide-sleeved outer garment paired with a light green tied ribbon underneath, while the lower skirt chooses magenta to heighten visual brightness contrast, finished with white pleated ruffles along the hem. Although rich in color palette, controlling saturation under natural daylight was essential to prevent harsh glare or overexposure. For Jinshi's costume, we used a dark blue and light blue paneling design; the outer robe edges feature regular light-colored geometric pattern borders, with a cross-collar overlapping design at the neck. The inner white lining contrasts sharply against the deep navy exterior, anchored by a predominantly black waist sash. The fabric drape and weight needed to maintain a crisp structure while standing to avoid obvious wrinkling when walking, so we devoted significant time to ironing and prepping the garments before the shoot. Wig pre-processing was a critical step for this set. Maomao's dark green hair required symmetrical dual buns on the sides with flowing tresses left below, complemented by appropriate golden hair ornaments and earrings. Secure hair fastening was mandatory to withstand natural outdoor breezes. Jinshi's long straight purple wig called for smooth luster; a white cloud-patterned hair accessory served as a highlight atop his head. Managing wind direction on long straight wigs outdoors is always a factor, so we waited for lulls between gusts to capture still moments.

Regarding camera capture, photographer Meat employed a combination of backlighting and semi-side backlighting. Choosing an outdoor wooden boardwalk for framing, the elevation and geometric horizontal lines of the railings provided a stable structural foundation. The background foliage generated circular bokeh spots due to the wide aperture, with light filtering through leaf gaps to hit the subjects' heads and shoulders. Rather than darkening facial features, backlighting enhanced facial dimensional depth through fill light, creating bright rim lighting around hair edges that cleanly separated subjects from the background.

For two-person interaction, we designed two poses. In the close-up angle of Picture 1, the two draw close with foreheads gently touching and relaxed, closed eyes. This stance requires no exaggerated body movements but demands great physical control and silent chemistry between partners; the right-hand character subtly embraces, with a lower palm resting gently on the other's sleeve, conveying an understated emotional bond. Picture 2 adopts a more direct, symmetrical standing stance, allowing viewers to clearly see the complete outfit architecture. Maomao folds her hands within her wide sleeves with a serene expression facing the camera. Jinshi rests one hand at his waist while letting the other fall naturally, standing in a relaxed posture with a confident, gentle smile.

The makeup stayed true to original character settings. Maomao's makeup palette remains delicate without heavy eyeshadow, relying on subtle eyeliner extension and elongated lashes to emphasize lively, intelligent eyes, finished with a nude lip texture aligning with her unpretentious persona. Jinshi's makeup focused on defining the brow peak—a straight, slightly raised eyebrow shape helped reinforce his refined aura, while a matte base prevented oily glare under outdoor lighting.

Accessory choices were kept clean and restrained, favoring the minimalist elegance of collars, sashes, and sleeve borders over excessive jewelry. In lighting balance, high-intensity backlit areas can complicate camera framing, requiring continuous adjustment of subject angles relative to light sources, using shade or cover to soften illumination. We made numerous attempts on set to achieve ideal lighting depth and contrast. Capturing fluid motion in costume ribbons during movement presented another challenge, so while keeping facial expressions composed, we relied on micro-movements to shift fabric folds gracefully.

Being period-style characters, outdoor wind and humidity naturally impact wigs and skirts, requiring constant care to keep hems clean from wood shavings or dust on the boardwalk. Tidying costumes after wrapping revealed minor subtle details—such as verifying symmetrical tightness on hair bun bindings and checking if wig fringe lengths obstructed eye lines—all valuable notes for future shoot reviews. Overall, the composition and lighting control for this shoot were well-executed, delivering natural character textures in an outdoor setting that fully align with our early conceptualization for Maomao cosplay and Jinshi cosplay in The Apothecary Diaries.
