[Maomao cosplay] The Apothecary Diaries: Maomao Amidst Forest Light and Shadows - Image 1

When sharing this Maomao cosplay set, what I want to talk about most is my approach to controlling hair and makeup details as well as the color grading process. The core focus of this photoshoot was to naturally blend the character into the forest setting.

During preparation, the first priority was the accuracy of the wig and hairstyle. I selected a vibrant turquoise-green wig and styled it into an intricate Traditional style cosplay updo, accented with dark, twig-textured hairpins at the bun and draping green bead strands. For makeup, I deliberately smudged reddish eyeshadow around the eyes and paired it with a deep crimson lip to create a cool, slightly mysterious aura.

The shooting location was a dense forest with sunlight filtering through the canopy. Natural dappled light fell onto the light-colored gauze outer robe, creating an airy, translucent texture. However, moving around in this outfit was quite challenging—especially with the inner dark green satin skirt, which has a crisp, lustrous drape that frequently snagged on branches as I walked through the woods. To achieve the skirt-lifting poses shown in the photos, we took multiple takes to catch the exact moment the breeze caught the fabric. Although it was a bit frantic, the final visual effect was immensely satisfying. The prominent red sash tied at the waist clashed boldly with the dark green skirt, making it pop strikingly against the verdant green backdrop.

Post-processing centered mainly on color grading, with the key challenge being balancing the layered shades of green between the forest background and the costume. I tweaked the highlights to make the sunspots look more luminous, while selectively deepening the skirt shadows to add three-dimensional depth. At the same time, I preserved the natural skin tones without over-smoothing, retaining the texture of the makeup. Small props such as the necklace and belt buckle were also individually fine-tuned. While the entire shoot was exhausting, capturing the character's calm yet sharp, inquisitive temperament through the lens was incredibly rewarding. I hope this immersive forest portrait set conveys all the beauty it was meant to.
