I've finally received the convention photos! While the memories are still fresh, I wanted to share my behind-the-scenes thoughts and styling details for cosplaying Ruan Mei. Deciding to cosplay Ruan Mei was entirely driven by how deeply captivated I was by her cool, detached, yet subtly enigmatic demeanor. Being a perfectionist for details, I did plenty of homework beforehand to faithfully capture her charm on the convention floor.
First, regarding the outfit: Ruan Mei's attire seamlessly blends classical Chinese elements with futuristic sci-fi aesthetics, featuring rich, complex textures. To replicate the semi-sheer waist and midriff section, I chose a breathable mesh fabric that avoids harsh, cheap specular reflections. The gold embroidery was custom-crafted to ensure it looked tactile and substantial under the lens without appearing flimsy. The primary blue hue is tricky to pull off, so I carefully selected a vibrant azure with just the right saturation—holding commanding presence without looking glaring under outdoor natural light.
As for the wig, Ruan Mei's signature black hair laced with cyan-blue highlights is the soul of the look. I spent hours trimming the bangs to frame the face naturally, while meticulously angling the cyan streaks close against the cheekbones so that both high-angle and profile shots looked flawless. Makeup-wise, the eyes were my primary focus: turquoise contact lenses paired with a soft crimson eyeshadow base, complemented by delicate red accents at the corners of the eyes to evoke an ethereal, fleeting allure. A classic true-red lip tied the look together with commanding poise.
On the day of the shoot, we chose an outdoor park lawn. To complement that serene, cool ambiance, we brought along an inflatable transparent armchair and a fluffy white faux-fur blanket. The contrast between transparent acrylic textures and soft plush fur, combined with expansive blue and white tones, looked stunning in natural daylight. Throughout the session, I experimented with various poses to convey Ruan Mei's poised yet detached demeanor—such as crossing my legs gracefully on the transparent armchair or languidly leaning against the backrest. Black Mary Jane heels paired with the blue floral thigh garter created an eye-catching contrast on camera, while holding the traditional round silk fan added a gentle, classical Chinese touch.
Cosplaying at conventions is genuinely exhausting—walking across venues in high heels while maintaining disciplined posture takes effort, but seeing these finished edits made every bit of hard work worthwhile. From pattern drafting to every micro-detail in makeup and styling, the entire journey of refinement was immensely fulfilling. I hope everyone enjoys this rendition of Ruan Mei, and I look forward to exploring even more diverse characters in the future!
