[Sushang cosplay] Sword Shadows and Chessboard of the Cloud Knights: A Honkai: Star Rail Martial Tale

Shooting this session in a traditional tea room suited the temperament of Cloud Knight Sushang in Honkai: Star Rail exceptionally well. The tailoring of the outfit was a highlight of this shoot: the golden patterns on the black leather corset had remarkable fidelity, which, paired with the inner water-ripple textured white garment and striking oversized orange sleeves, created a visual aesthetic blending martial sharpness with her trademark lively spirit for this Chinese-style photography. The purple paneling at the shoulders and the red tassel pendant added rich dimensional layers to the overall styling, where cool tones collided with vibrant orange.

During the shoot, we prepared several props tailored to the character. When holding the sword, I deliberately tested various grip angles to maintain the upright bearing of a Cloud Knight soldier without appearing overly rigid. For the chess-playing and reading scenes, a dark wooden low table and bamboo scrolls were chosen for styling; this contrast was quite engaging. Since Sushang's lore depicts her not as a mature, calculating sage, but rather as someone carrying the endearing innocence of a novice martial artist entering the Jianghu, maintaining relaxed naturalness in gaze and demeanor was crucial. The sleeves of this outfit are exceptionally wide; when pouring tea or placing chess pieces, the cuffs naturally drape across the tabletop, making dynamic snapshots of those fleeting moments far more expressive than static poses in this Honkai: Star Rail cosplay.

As for the sword prop, the intricate patterns on the scabbard were delicate, accentuating metallic sheen nicely under dedicated lighting. The studio lighting was dialed into a warm, soft glow, which, combined with folding screens and paper lantern backdrops, dialed the atmospheric aesthetic to perfection. Furthermore, the lower-body design was remarkably nimble: the white miniskirt and asymmetrical black inner hem allowed for broader movements, capturing organic leg lines naturally. Reviewing the raw photos, I was especially fond of a few slight high-angle chess shots and downcast-gaze frames holding the sword. I was extremely pleased with the overall texture of this styling—the fabric's thickness and structural support made the entire shoot remarkably smooth for Portrait photography.

The makeup was specifically tailored to match the character's demeanor: a clean, crisp base with eye makeup emphasizing contours and spirited vitality—unlike heavy dark aesthetics, it favored bright, heroic sharpness. During the shoot, the photographer (which was myself!) held high standards for composition. For instance, framing the subject with rounded paper lanterns in the foreground and background helped anchor the viewer's focus directly onto the face and chest ornaments. In lighting control, background highlights were subtly suppressed to let the warm glow from the lanterns illuminate the outfit, revealing the texture of the white fabric and the organic sheen of the black leather. When holding the sword, core tension at the waist required careful attention to avoid slumping and maintain the character's spirited resolve. The raw captures were plentiful and many were favorites, but considering overall composition and immediate visual intrigue, Photo 1 was selected as the cover because it captured Sushang's casual yet alert, quick-witted moment in this Sushang cosplay. This photoshoot was a joyful creative experience, striving to convey the character's inner martial spirit through the frame.
