As a cosplayer who frequently deals with night lighting, being able to snap a satisfying night portrait on an urban rooftop in the dead of night sometimes takes much more effort than an outdoor location during the day. This time, using the character Promeia from Zenless Zone Zero to attempt the shaping of a night atmosphere serves overall as a major test of my props, wig securing, and on-site positioning.
Originally, I wanted to express that melancholic and cool feel in a Cyberpunk style city, but only when I arrived at the shooting venue did I realize that the city's night wind and scattered light sources are extremely hard to control. That ultra-long and heavy high ponytail at the end of the hair is a very important memory point for the character; to prevent it from getting messy in the wind or blocking facial expressions, just combing the hair strands and hiding the internal support points took over half an hour to ensure it could drape along the posture without looking rigid. In terms of clothing, the black glossy leather jacket and reflective pants-boots are the highlights of this styling. Under the reflection of streetlights and background high-rise neons, the cold, hard texture brought by the material reflection truly emerged, which also required the photographer's lighting to be sufficiently precise to avoid messy light spots on the leather surface.
Those high-difficulty actions during shooting actually heavily tested my body balance. To find a pose that could both express the character's composure and carry a unique stance, we tried several rounds. This set of photos deliberately darkened the ambient light in post-processing, preserving some cool cyan-blue tones as the primary color, which fits perfectly with the urban nightscape and the character's inherent sense of aloofness. Throughout the photography process, the photographer kept guiding my gaze, truly wanting to find the "most melancholic" split second and freeze it. Actually, the character Promeia's temperament in the setting leans toward being calm and composed, but placed under the cool tones of this panoramic city night view, slightly lowering the eyebrows or gazing far to the side naturally exudes a serene and somewhat emotional sense of story. This subtle "melancholy" is not about forced misery or decadence; it is more like a sense of aloof pride, examining one's own existence alone in a noisy and icy cyber city.
The greatest difficulty of this night portrait shoot lay in how to blend the character's own setting with the real city background. The lighting team spent a lot of thought on the lighting ratio and color temperature, using a large area of cool-toned key light to outline the silhouette, and a tiny area of warm-toned low light to bring out the figure's natural skin texture, avoiding the entire frame becoming overly pale or ghost-like due to an all-cool color scheme, to maintain that realism of a "living person." Looking back at the final finished photos, the blurred city lights at night and the bokeh spots of the distant background skyscrapers, combined with the sharp reflections on the leather pants and boots, maximize the city's cold yet gorgeous atmosphere.
In fact, a lot of times, atmospheric cosplay is not just about the clothes and makeup on the surface, but more about wanting to pass down the character's core through limbs and emotions. Although we were shooting a night portrait and it was cold and sleepy during the process, seeing the final effect made me feel that all the hardships of staying up late and fighting the strong wind to organize the hairstyle were well worth it. This is a dual persistence to the character and my own aesthetics. I hope this set of photos can bring everyone a visual experience different from the bright light of daytime, allowing you to also feel that tranquility, crisp coldness, and unique beauty exclusive to the dark night.
