For this cosplay photoshoot supporting the Honor of Kings National Competition Starlight Track, I chose the character Yun Ying. To harmonize with the theme of Esports Glory, for our location scouting, we specifically found a nocturnal street steeped in rich traditional Chinese style elements. The red-and-white outfit is packed with fine details—the golden filigree patterns and waist ornaments all had to be adjusted individually to their optimal placements prior to shooting. Styling the wig also took considerable time; the red and green hair accessories at the crown especially needed to be anchored firmly so they would remain flawless even during wide-ranging, dynamic martial poses.
The spear in hand was the core focal prop of this shoot. This weapon is not only long, but also adorned with flame-motif golden engravings; to convey Yun Ying's crisp, agile martial arts prowess before the lens, I repeatedly practiced spear-wielding stances. In Photo 1, resting against the wooden railing appears languid, yet keeping balance while ensuring the spear didn't look awkward in the frame kept my arm muscles continuously flexed. Transitioning later to shoulder-carrying the spear on one shoulder while balancing on a single leg demanded even greater physical stamina and core stability. The final pose in particular—a high leg extension leaning backward—required balancing the weapon's trajectory, the skirt's fluttering arc, the texture of the snug base layers and stockings, and facial expression control; it took multiple attempts to capture the most satisfying split-second shot.
The red lanterns were the true soul of this photo collection. The nocturnal ambient light was quite dim, but thanks to the vast array of warm amber lanterns overhead, a gentle warm sheen naturally coated the figure. This illumination made the crimson garments all the more vivid, while the background bokeh created soft light orbs that amplified the overall atmosphere. During kinetic snapshots along the street, light from the lanterns striking diagonally from behind not only sculpted the silhouette, but also accentuated the metallic sheen of the spear. The wooden railings and dark blue-gray brick walls, along with red gauze draping down both sides, resonated seamlessly with Yun Ying's character aesthetic.
Whenever the Honor of Kings National Competition Starlight Track is mentioned, what springs to mind is that blood-pumping thrill on the tournament battlefield. Freezing Esports Glory through the camera lens is not only an homage to the character, but also an alternative artistic expression of this competitive esports spirit. Yun Ying is intrinsically a spirited, fearless character with sharp spearplay and a straightforward persona. Throughout the shoot, I strove constantly to channel her bold confidence and unruly charm. While I might not be standing directly on the esports tournament stage competing, capturing the character's heroic spirit before the lens through Game cosplay offers a distinctive, heartfelt sense of participation. Exhausting as the shoot was, seeing the interplay of chiaroscuro and kinetic action in the final photos made every bit of preparation feel deeply rewarding.
Although the costume looks effortlessly flowing, the layered fabrics easily became disheveled during night shooting; after every single action, my assistant helped smooth out the skirt hem and sash. Coordinating the gloves and bracers also underwent multiple micro-adjustments to prevent looking bulky during dynamic motion captures. Night photography tests fill lighting the most: beyond the ambient lanterns, adding frontal and side fill lights was necessary to keep facial contours and fabric nuances crisp and legible. The crimson outer robe possessed gorgeous tactile texture under warm light, forming a striking visual contrast against the white inner lining. Overall, participating in this support photoshoot for the Honor of Kings National Competition was an unforgettable journey, and I hope these frames transmit Yun Ying's fiery passion and the captivating thrill of Esports Glory to everyone.
