[Sandrone Cosplay] Genshin Impact's Fatui Marionette: Convention Freeze-Frames and Marionette Balance

The assembly and adjustment process of this outfit required much more attention to detail on-site than expected. In particular, the red-and-gold decorative pattern on the chest reflected light under the convention's overhead lights, requiring the photographer to lower the light source angle slightly to control shadow layers and give the color blocks on the outfit a uniform texture. The connection between the white ruffled headpiece and light blonde long hair at the hairline was softened so that even after wearing it for a long time, the top of the head wouldn't look unnatural under the weight of the hairpiece.

The combination of white tights and black glossy Mary Jane shoes was a set pairing I carefully deliberated before the shoot. To ensure continuity between standing and sitting poses, I specifically chose a heel style with a stable platform. Balancing on the edge of the retro thick books and the cushion of the red velvet wooden chair was quite a challenge; my ankles would occasionally tighten unconsciously to maintain my center of gravity. This slightly tense elegance unexpectedly fit the character's setting as a puppeteer.

The marionette prop was the core prop of this creative work. To prevent the thin strings from betraying the illusion on camera, I tried various arm-raising angles. Sometimes my arms got sore from holding them up, but the moment I saw the unedited raw photos where the marionette seemed truly floating in midair, I felt all the pose design was worth it. The blue fluorescence emitted by the mechanical creations in Figures 1 and 3 created a warm-cool contrast with the gold decorations, adding a rugged mechanical workshop atmosphere to the entire picture.

As for scene selection, I intentionally picked a relatively quiet corner area of the convention. Although the surroundings were bustling with people, the exposed industrial-style ceiling and dense cool-toned spotlights made fill-lighting the character surprisingly convenient. The overhead light hitting my cheeks and the ruffles of the outfit made the original layered texture of the skirt much clearer. I don't really like using large softboxes to erase all highlights; preserving the crisp texture of the clothing better reflects the character's restrained and slightly aloof demeanor.

During the shoot, I needed to switch frequently between sitting, standing, and leaning against the books. These four sets of photos correspond to different action tensions, especially the scene in Figure 4 where I sat on stacked books—it required keeping the skirt from flattening against my sides while managing the positioning of the doll in hand. The hem of the skirt actually features an orange-yellow lining; this multi-layered hem design spreads naturally when walking, making dynamic snapshots look fantastic.

The white base combined with black paneled design actually puts considerable tightness around the waist and abdomen, but this proved very friendly for posing, naturally supporting the character's silhouette and presenting a clean, sharp visual effect without consciously pulling in my stomach. Paired with cool-toned eye makeup, rosy-red lips, and light blue colored contact lenses, my entire presence before the lens exhibited a quiet state. This was a lighting experiment I tried in anime convention portrait photography, shifting focus away from excessive color contrast onto the collision between mechanical texture and soft fabrics.

In post-processing, I didn't do exaggerated color grading, focusing mainly on restoring the original fabric texture and the direction of natural lighting on set. I've always felt lighting techniques don't need excessive showmanship; being clean and smooth, allowing one to see the gold thread embroidery on the sleeves and the fabric weave on the skirt is enough. I hope this recreation of body balance, prop control, and mechanical texture captures the unique aura of the character at the anime convention, serving as a fruitful photography practice with intricately designed uniforms.
