Completing this swimsuit cosplay photoshoot on a summer beach, I'm taking the opportunity right after finishing the post-processing to do a cosplay photoshoot sharing of some details and experiences from this shoot. Before this shoot, we decided to find a location with an open sea view and clean water quality, so as to better present the character's refreshing and translucent feel by the summer seaside.
The gear combination for this shoot was a Sony A7C II body plus a 35mm GM lens. This focal length is highly versatile for outdoor portrait photography; it can preserve rich seaside environmental elements in half-body and full-body compositionsāsuch as distant mountains, rolling waves, and the clear sky overheadāwhile also utilizing the lens's close-up capability and large aperture to achieve excellent in-focus sharpness and background bokeh during close-ups, making the subject stand out from the complex background. This Sony A7C II portrait shoot was scheduled during a time in the afternoon when the illumination was relatively soft yet still sufficient. This was partly to avoid overhead sunlight casting unsightly shadows on the face, and partly because the angled lighting beautifully outlines facial contours while giving the skin a healthy texture instead of an overly pale appearance.
In terms of makeup and hair, the focus of this look lies in recreating the character's silver-grey long hair and the iconic halo above her head. Since the shooting location was an actual beach, the sea breeze kicking up spray and wind posed a major challenge for the wig styling. To maintain the flowing feel of the hair strands, we abandoned overusing setting spray, opting instead to comb it immediately after each shot. This way, the captured hair strands look more natural, aligning with the real motion of the sea breeze. To adapt to the high temperatures outdoors, a relatively refreshing and breathable base makeup was selected to avoid the discomfort brought by a heavy makeup look after sweating.
For the attire, a one-piece swimsuit with a black, blue, and white color scheme was chosen. The shoulder strap design of this swimsuit is quite clean, and the close-fitting cut ensures no shifting occurs when body movements extend, making it ideal for large-scale motion capture by the seaside. During the shoot, I intentionally made a gesture of shading the sunlight with my hand. This pose not only aligns with the authentic outdoor summer settingācreating a contrast between reality and fiction with the glowing virtual halo above my headābut also wonderfully exhibits the character's facial expression and temperament. During shooting intervals, we also made sure to hydrate and apply sunscreen; after all, outdoor shooting takes quite a while, and maintaining a good physical state is essential for better on-camera performance during summer seaside cosplay.
Throughout the shooting process, utilizing the natural backdrop where the sea meets the sky effectively was key. The 35mm lens could accommodate a vast expanse of the sea surface, but we consciously avoided cluttered buildings in the distance during framing to keep the image strictly within the simple dominant color palette of blue, white, and black. In post-processing, I leaned towards preserving the white foamy feel of the waves hitting the sand in the original photo, while slightly darkening the blue of the sky just a bit to make the brightness of the blue halo stand out more. The overall tone maintains a refreshing and natural atmosphere without adding excessive filters.
From planning to execution, we tried our best to align every detail of this photo set with the character's state in a summer scene. Compared to inside a studio, although real-location outdoor shooting is influenced by multiple factors like wind, weather, and tides, the captured natural moments possess much more vitality. I am highly satisfied with the overall atmospheric feel of the photos brought back this time, smoothly merging elements of summer and ocean waves with the character's memorable image. Ultimately, freezing this comfortable summer day of sunshine and gentle breeze into photographs makes for a wonderful shooting record.
