To prepare for this Yamada Ryo cosplay from Bocchi the Rock! for the convention, I started sorting out my gear a week in advance.
Wig styling was a major project. The bright blue bob had bangs extending past my eyes when it first arrived, so I carefully thinned it along the layers to sculpt that signature, slightly disheveled texture. The two black bobby pins on the left side are the true soul—clipping them on instantly brought out that aloof, cheekily unapologetic aura. For makeup, the golden-yellow lenses were the core; to emphasize the character's trademark deadpan, world-weary yet utterly shameless demeanor, I deepened the reddish-brown shading around the outer eye corners to evoke subtle fatigue, contrasting sharply against red lip gloss.
For the outfit, I wore a black V-neck sweater over a white dress shirt, with a slender blue ribbon tied at the collar, paired with a navy pleated skirt and black pantyhose (Black stockings), grounded by black loafers. The most essential prop was the black guitar case slung across my back; even though it held a lightweight replica inside, wearing it instantly made me feel crushed beneath a mountain of debt! To recreate the iconic weed-eating gag, I bought a stainless steel basin and a bunch of fresh leafy greens. During the shoot, the photographer told me to hold a leaf in my mouth; at first I couldn't stop laughing at how ridiculous it felt, but once I locked into character, that 'eating weeds yet looking dead cool' expression fell right into place. I ran through all sorts of poses—pinching my skirt hem, pointing a finger to the heavens, and begging with the basin.
Foot traffic was heavy at the Chuwuyu Comic Con, so I specifically sought out a quiet spot beside an exterior glass curtain wall outside the venue. Natural light refracted softly through the glass with a cool tone, allowing us to capture great frames without complex lighting setups. Walking around outdoors bundled in a sweater and Black stockings was definitely muggy, but seeing the final cuts made everything worthwhile. The greatest joy of cosplaying this 2D character is performing absurd antics with a completely straight face. Though she always maintains a detached exterior, her dedication to music and her band is deeply moving. To embody her blend of aloofness and comedy, I kept my facial expressions strictly restrained, pursing my lips slightly with weary, half-lidded eyes.
From styling to props, this set was fine-tuned repeatedly; the combination of Black stockings and the guitar case gave the compositions distinct narrative depth. The color grading preserved a cool palette, emphasizing tonal cohesion between the bright blue wig and the navy skirt, while retaining natural skin textures without over-smoothing. Amusing interludes happened during the shoot, like a passing security guard giving me utterly bewildered glances as I stood holding an empty metal basin. Carrying the guitar case left my shoulders aching by the end, but translating a character I adore into reality through cosplay and capturing such satisfying compositions gave me an irreplaceable sense of accomplishment. Sincere thanks to the photographer and logistics crew—I'm thrilled with these Convention photos and look forward to experimenting with more fun shooting concepts (Yamada Ryo cosplay & Bocchi the Rock!).
