[Kamisato Ayaka cosplay] Deskmate Ayaka Modern AU: Where Showa Aesthetic Meets Birthday Cake

This Modern AU shoot of Genshin Impact's Kamisato Ayaka brought together every element I had been longing to capture. Having wanted to shoot this GiGO design for a while, I incorporated my own interpretations into the look. Rather than the ubiquitous Heytea JK uniform, this styling leans heavily into a vintage Showa aesthetic, channeling the nostalgic charm of a classic campus. To fit the concept of Ayaka as your deskmate, the venue was set in a classroom featuring dark wooden desks and chairs. Ample natural sunlight poured through the windows, casting elongated shadows across the desktops and timber floorboards to create an immaculate ambiance.

Considerable thought went into hair and makeup. For the wig, I selected long straight pale-blue locks crowned with a prominent pink bow, while leaving shoulder-length twin side-tails framing the cheeks, tied off with dainty pink elastics that swayed gently with every movement. The makeup centered on the eyes, pairing azure contact lenses with soft pink eyeshadow and a rosy flush of blush. A delicate beauty mark was drawn on my left cheek, finished with an orange-red lip tint to brighten my overall complexion. The ensemble consists of a long-sleeved white button-down layered with a sailor-collar capelet rimmed in gold trim, anchored visually by the massive pink bow across the chest. Below, a navy-blue high-waisted suspender skirt trimmed with yellow hem striping provided substantial drape and weight. Styled with white socks and black leather uniform loafers, the entire look radiated the nostalgic grace of a Showa-era schoolgirl.

During the session, the frames holding blank sheets of paper and a notebook are personal favorites of mine, capturing split seconds of quiet self-study or thoughtful contemplation. In the shot seated at the desk writing before glancing up at the camera, it feels as if your quiet deskmate is watching you attentively—wonderfully intimate and lifelike. Our prop team prepared a blue smartphone, notebooks, pens, and a plush figurine on the desk to inject lived-in realism. Blind box figures and volumes along the shelves, together with a potted plant on the windowsill, richly fleshed out the classroom backdrop.

Falling right around the birthday of our beloved Kamisato family darling, this photoshoot also served as a celebratory birthday tribute. Regarding character interpretation, I have always felt she possesses a unique synthesis of noble grace and gentle approachability. Before the lens, I sought to project that quiet concentration while keeping her glances vivid and engaging. Every cosplay endeavor—from conceiving the concept and styling garments to scouting locations—is a process of rediscovering the character. Exploring this modern campus theme allowed me not only to experiment with a fresh aesthetic, but also to commemorate this birthday with something truly distinctive. The magic of a Modern AU lies in detaching from fantasy lore to make a character touchingly accessible within tangible, everyday warmth.

While the preparation was intricate, reviewing the finished frames made every ounce of effort worthwhile. This set fulfilled my vision for this concept and brought sheer joy to the daily routine. I remain the agile dog running across the mountains at heart, eager to keep this passion alive, explore more beloved looks, and translate the visions in my mind onto film. You don't need grandiose architecture; sometimes a beam of light through a classroom window and a notebook on a desk are enough to tell a captivating story. In terms of color grading, I worked closely with the photographer to preserve crisp, luminous transparency and natural light and shadow, minimizing artificial airbrushing so the imagery felt wonderfully organic and real.
