[Youmu Konpaku cosplay] The Touhou Project Gardener in Night train Style

Getting straight to the point, this Youmu Konpaku cosplay was based on illustrations by artist Night train. Regarding the photoshoot, the most challenging part was managing the outfit. The large black ribbon on the head was difficult to secure, requiring plenty of hairspray and bobby pins to keep it in place. The short white wig also required neat trimming to capture that clean, slightly aloof demeanor from Night train's artwork.

The outfit presents a striking visual contrast: a white kimono top paired with a mint green pleated skirt begins with a fresh color scheme, but the large skull and red-and-blue floral patches on the skirt immediately shift the aesthetic toward something dark and eerie. The white ruffled hem is lovely, though easy to trip over when walking. The wide black obi sash with a slender red cord knot preserves traditional kimono elements while adding anime-style finesse. The black-and-white patterned tabi socks with red-thong geta required careful footing to avoid chafing, keeping movements measured.

For props, though the two katanas were made of lightweight materials, holding them during extended poses still felt demanding. The kneeling sword-draw pose in Photo 3 was exhausting to maintain, requiring core and arm tension to reflect the crisp, cool allure of Night train's style. By contrast, the sake-pouring pose in Photo 5 was much easier: sitting seiza on a cushion, holding a small sake flask beside a warm paper lantern instantly created an evocative mood. The photographer expertly manipulated lighting, casting cool blue tones onto the cherry blossoms and shoji doors to match the melancholic aesthetic I envisioned for the Gardener character.

Although managing the outfit's pleats and keeping the skull patch centered took considerable time, holding the swords made all the effort worthwhile. For makeup, light blue contacts and bold black eyeliner recreated the character's slightly hollow gaze. Shot across a traditional Japanese courtyard and indoor tatami room with cherry blossom staging, the entire scene captured the Touhou Project fantasy world.
