Equipped with a Canon EOS R6 Mark II paired with the EF 85mm f/1.4L USM lens, we headed to the coastline to capture this official The Shorekeeper cosplay photoshoot from Wuthering Waves. Setting the shoot along a sandy beach seamlessly mirrored the Black Shores lore. Afternoon lighting was the paramount factor—we arrived a little over an hour before sunset specifically to wait for that breathtaking rim light. The 85mm focal length is an absolute dream at the seaside: shooting wide open cleanly melted away the distant cresting waves and shoreline structures into creamy bokeh, isolating the character with striking visual clarity. Because the sun hung low on the horizon, combined with ambient ocean mist, locking focus against intense backlighting was slightly challenging; fortunately, the R6 Mark II's eye-detection autofocus proved remarkably reliable, nailing the vast majority of kinetic frames. To illuminate facial details, my assistant held a reflector at a forward-side angle, bathing the face in soft, balanced fill light to avoid muddy shadow falloff.
The wardrobe is laden with delicate nuances—especially those semi-translucent cerulean gossamer streamers and criss-crossing back ties, which billow gorgeously in the wind yet remain notoriously difficult to tame. Walking across soft sand in strappy high heels was an absolute trial: sinking into the sand with every single step, I had to balance on tiptoe to find firmer patches of wet packed sand. To ensure the ribbons unfurled into organic arcs, we waited patiently for incoming gusts, attempting dozens of takes before freezing that fleeting mid-air flutter captured in Photo 1. Managing the wig also required constant vigilance; salt-laden sea breezes tangle strands easily, requiring a thorough comb-out and a spritz of hairspray at every camera repositioning to keep the tips sculpted.
Photo 3 is my personal favorite of the entire series: the lighting ratio during that over-the-shoulder glance was pure perfection. Even as twilight settled, the distant rolling surf retained a cool navy tone that resonated harmoniously with the blues of the dress. For this set, I chose character-accurate white stockings (Stockings) paired with strappy stilettos; while initially worried they might appear discordant against beach sand, they visually elongated the leg line when framed beneath the sheer hemline. Combined with the open-back lattice strapping, the resulting silhouette achieved an unexpectedly fluid visual balance.
The entire shoot was an ongoing duel with sea breezes and blowing sand, with salty spray repeatedly dusting the front lens element and requiring frequent lens-cloth wipe-downs. Yet seeing the golden specular highlights on the surf interlace with the flowing blue gossamer fabric made every ounce of afternoon fatigue vanish. I hope these images convey the tranquil, boundless expanse of that seaside sunset.
