[Rei Ayanami cosplay] Dark Studio Shoot Notes: Character Recreation from EVA: Neon Genesis Evangelion

This is a shoot log of my Rei Ayanami cosplay from the 2D world of EVA: Neon Genesis Evangelion. We chose a dark-toned studio setting where the floor reflections paired with overhead lighting to create a cool, lonely atmosphere.

The bodysuit has a very strong texture, and its black base with red and silver accents produces striking highlight reflections under the lights, which is the most intriguing aspect of this outfit. The suit is quite tight, so putting it on, taking it off, and making adjustments took considerable time—especially taking it off, which was exhausting. The high-heeled long boots have very high heels; although inconvenient to walk in, they dramatically elongate the leg lines and make my posture more upright, matching the character's detached, inhuman coolness.

The red-and-black spear prop on the ground was quite heavy, and my arms grew sore after holding it in poses for just a short while. To avoid distracting the viewer's focus, I discussed it with the photographer and decided to lay it horizontally in the foreground. This not only added depth of field to the composition, but the cool metallic glow of the spear also echoed the main subject. The seated pose was adjusted multiple times; at first, the legs looked awkward no matter how I positioned them, but later I shifted my center of gravity onto the crossed ankles, leaned slightly forward, and wrapped my hands around my knees, utilizing the lines of the high-heeled long boots to visually extend the silhouette.

The shoot required a vacant, unfocused gaze without directly locking onto the lens, so I constantly tried relaxing my eye muscles and adjusting my line of sight. The makeup was intentionally done with a cool-toned pale foundation, which paired with the light blue short hair to create a translucent texture under the overhead light. Sitting in the bodysuit for a long time under the cool white lighting made my legs go numb while still having to hold the posture. Cosplay shoots are indeed physical labor, but within this dark space, I gradually began to feel the character's resolute detachment from the world.

Throughout the entire shoot, we continuously tweaked fine details, such as the angle of hair falling over the eyes and the exact placement of light glints on my arms and legs. The photographer tried numerous angles, and when reviewing the photos at the end, I felt the cool tone and composition had achieved the intended effect. I hope this set of photos conveys that unique presence of Rei Ayanami from EVA: Neon Genesis Evangelion.
