To shoot this set of Tang Wutong cosplay photos, I took a special flight to Erhai Lake in Dali. For an outdoor cosplay photoshoot, environmental light, wind direction, and the pairing of background elements are actually much more complex than studio shoots. This shoot also gave me deeper insights into Xianxia ancient style cosplay location shoots.
Let's first talk about the conception of this look. Tang Wutong's blue-and-purple gradient long hair is highly susceptible to lighting. To present the layers of the hair, fluffiness was deliberately retained when combing the hairstyle. The golden feather-like hair accessory on the head is the crowning touch, using metallic-textured materials to ensure it doesn't look plastic under harsh light. For the costume, the main skirt hem was chosen from semi-transparent chiffon and light tulle layers, and the inner lining used an off-white color with a pearlescent feel. To maintain this layered drape, the screening of costume materials and stitching treatment become exceptionally important. The golden embroidery pattern on the chest is hand-sewn. Under the intense sunlight of Erhai Lake, these gold and silver thread embroideries generate weak reflections as angles change, possessing more texture than ordinary printed fabrics.
Regarding the choice of shooting environment, Dali's weather was truly cooperative. On the day of the shoot, the sky presented an exceptionally clean azure blue, and the water surface also formed large areas of shimmering effects due to the strong sunlight. This highlight spill combined with a cool-toned environment actually tests the camera's dynamic range and the usage of reflectors. We utilized large-area reflectors on-site to provide fill light for the face, ensuring that the catchlight in the eyes was clear under backlighting, and the facial skin tone wouldn't look too dark due to being backlit. Shooting with the water surface of Erhai Lake as the background not only fills the blank space in the mid-ground but also creates a light and shadow echo with the character's flowing blue-and-purple sheer dress, greatly enhancing the translucency and ethereal feel of the frame.
The withered wood in the scene is an excellent contrast element. The rough, dim texture of the withered wood forms a strong visual contrast with the lightweight, bright sheer dress. To make the composition more harmonious, I tried several different camera positions and movements. For example, in the set sitting on the withered wood, it mainly utilizes the high-slit design of the skirt hem, paired with stockings to outline the leg lines, which retains the character's charm while making the figure look slender. When capturing these movements, I noticed that the wide cuffs of the clothes could easily lose their shape with the wind, so close cooperation with the photographer was required to press the shutter during brief pauses in the wind direction, ensuring the folds of the cuffs and skirt hem presented a naturally extended form.
The difficulty of shooting this set of photos lies in the reefs and shallow shoals underfoot. Although the character displays a relaxed and lightweight posture, these rocks were actually very wet and slippery, and I was wearing custom footwear with a certain height-increasing effect, so my soles would feel sore after standing for a long time. When shooting the close-up shot holding a flower branch, to avoid the crowd and clutter in the background, we needed to find a very low low-angle shooting position, and while adjusting the angles of my face and hands, I also had to maintain my body balance, which indeed required a lot of energy. However, seeing the light spots formed by the sunlight refracting on the skirt hem and the natural sense of the hair blown by the wind in the final photos, I felt all this hard work was worth it.
Overall, this Tang Wutong Erhai Lake location shoot was a wonderful shooting experience. The sense of openness brought by a large body of water like Erhai Lake is hard to match for ordinary city parks. In post-processing, I specially retained a portion of the side-backlighting feel brought by natural light, rather than excessively pursuing that overexposed dreamy look, hoping to truly restore the material of the costume and the three-dimensionality of the facial features under natural light. For Chinese anime cosplay, truly integrating the 2D fantasy elements into the 3D natural scenery is the most enjoyable creative process in outdoor photoshoots.
