[Tang Wutong Cosplay] Dancing with Blue Butterflies: The Blue-Haired Girl from Soul Land

For this Tang Wutong cosplay shoot, I specifically chose an industrial-style backdrop hung with delicate white and blue butterflies. The cold, dark metal perforated wall paired with these butterflies dangling on fine threads creates a cool, distant, dreamlike atmosphere that fits the character's temperament perfectly. To make the butterflies look scattered and naturally layered in the frame, I adjusted their hanging heights several times during setup, hoping to achieve rich depth of field in the shots.

As for costume details, the upper body features a blue-and-white gradient strapless corset with stiff boning inside, cinching the waist just right without losing shape. The outer skirt consists of voluminous layered stiff tulle; while it looks stunning in photos, it takes up a lot of space and often tripped me up when walking or searching for angles, so I barely dared to walk around between takes. The detachable white sheer arm sleeves were hand-sewn by me. Since they slide off easily, my assistant followed me throughout the day to adjust them so they held their shape in every photo, especially when I raised my arms to wave, creating soft, elegant lines with their gentle drape.

The golden floating halo above my head is another key soul element of this styling. I used ultra-fine metal wire to construct a bracket attached to the wig, applying a matte finish to the metal surface so it wouldn't create harsh reflections under top lighting. For the blue hair outfit, I picked a pale ice-blue wig and trimmed the bangs myself into curtain bangs framing my forehead, adding light highlights to make the hair feel airy. Though lightweight, with the ring attached on top, it required strong glue and bobby pins to stay put, otherwise tilting my head back even slightly would make it fall off. In several shots, I had to hold my pose while secretly using my neck muscles to keep the prop steady.

Worth mentioning is the pale four-pointed star pattern on my thigh. It wasn't printed on the stockings; rather, I hand-drew it on the white thigh-highs outfit using a skin-safe reddish-brown gel eyeliner during makeup. I squatted for a long time to get the placement precise, waiting several minutes for it to dry, as any slight rub would smudge it. Luckily, once finished, paired with pale gray pointed-toe high heels, it visually elongated my leg lines and added a subtle accent to the white stockings so they didn't look plain.

Among the poses in this shoot, my personal favorite is the one where I lift the skirt. Balancing on one leg with my torso slightly turned and toes touching the ground, I pinched one side of the skirt. This single-leg pose while lifting the skirt required a surprising amount of core strength to stay still for a few seconds so the photographer could capture it. Wearing high heels helped elongate my silhouette, and combined with the white stockings, it fully showcased my leg contours. In fact, my ankles were quite sore after holding those poses.

As for lighting, the studio used overhead lighting paired with side backlight. The top light clearly defined my facial contours, while the side light illuminated the blue and white butterflies, making them stand out sharply against the dark gray background as if awakened and ready to flutter away. To achieve this cool, dark-toned effect, I kept my makeup mostly matte to control shine, making highlight suppression during post-processing much easier while maintaining a clear, unified tone.

During the shoot, the long wooden staff and iridescent ribbon served as great elements to add motion to the frame. The staff itself is a rigid prop, but I used it as a support point while standing, leaning slightly against it to soften its harshness into a relaxed stance. The ribbon responded dynamically to my movements—in the second photo, swinging my arm created a rainbow arc through space, capturing a stunning moment that complemented the static composition. Preparing for a cosplay shoot from scene design and makeup details to prop placement involves tedious work, but seeing the final result makes every bit of effort worth it. That is the magic of cosplay—bringing beautiful 2D characters into reality.
